Tone Depth: “I think the sound that Afterlife has been representing is something quite unique and stands out”

Tone Depth has been redefining his sound and putting the melody back into his music.

Now, fluidity and simplicity reign. With Tone Depth’s focus on music at an all-time high, there is a newfound desire to innovate with the raw, live-recorded elements that are the keystone to a sweeping new sound.

Tone Depth is part of the latest Afterlife compilation, ‘Realm of Consciousness Pt.III’. We caught with him to discuss his participation.

Electronic Groove: Hi Tone, thanks for the time to chat with us. We want to just jump ahead and ask you about the release of ‘Realm Of Consciousness Pt. III’ on Afterlife. Are you excited about this one?

Tone Depth:  For sure I’m excited. It’s great to be on this compilation on such a fantastic label with great artists that I enjoy and respect.

EG: The compilation features innovative artists like Tale Of Us, Recondite and Agents Of  Time to name a few. Have any of your peers been a strong influence on what you do?

Tone Depth: I would definitely say so. I think the sound that Afterlife has been representing is something quite unique and stands out. I’ve always liked what ‘Tale of Us‘ do, so I  think anything I enjoy has a strong influence on me.

EG: The track closure is ‘Ibn Sina’. What can you tell about the production and creative process behind it?

Tone Depth: Ibn Sina is the name of the main highway that crosses the Sinai desert in Egypt. I recently took a road trip there and this is where the inspiration from the track came from. It was originally written on guitar and then transferred to MIDI so I could replace the guitar with some synths that I had programmed.

EG: Where are you living right now? What can you tell us about the local scene?

Tone Depth: Where I live now the only scene is forest, mountains and that’s pretty much it. I live in  Morin-Heights, Canada which is an hour north of Montreal, up in ski country. I’m originally from Montreal and moved here 2 years ago, so that’s the nearest scene to where I live and I can say it is definitely a very healthy vibrant scene and we are spoilt for choice.

EG: Does the environment inspire or affect the outcome of your music?

Tone Depth: Yes, definitely. This was the main reason I moved to the countryside and it has made all the difference in the world. I produce and get inspired much better being surrounded by nature and having no distractions. Good scenery always helps.

EG: How about your summer plans? Do you have any gigs you are looking forward too?
Tone Depth: I’m definitely looking forward to the upcoming ‘Fryhide’ events with ‘Hosh’ as he’s a  great friend and one of my favorite artists that I look up to. Also, the ‘Afterlife’ event’s with ‘Tale of Us’ that I’ll be playing this summer. As well as that there will be Exit and Pacha Sharm (Sanafir) in Egypt that are always fun events as well as my first time playing for Jean Claude Ades at his ‘Be Crazy’ night in Ibiza.

EG: Have you heard any new artists that have caught your interest?

Tone Depth: Yes there’s a lot of new talent that I’m loving at the moment. Some artists that have really caught my attention lately are Mathame, Woo York, Simao, 1979 and especially Groj for his unique sound.

EG: What would be your dream location to play at?

Tone Depth: As for just locations, my dream would be to do an event on the island of Santorini in Greece with a captivating view.

EG: You also recently released music with Hosh label, fryhide. How did you link with him?

Tone Depth: Back in October of last year my manager sent him some of my music to see if he would be interested for anything for his new label Fryhide. He loved the stuff and contacted me right away. 2 weeks later he was in Canada on tour so I had him stay with me for a week at my place in the country and we hit it off right away as good friends and did our first collab together.

EG: A few artists have mentioned that one of the perks of touring is having the possibility to experience worldwide gastronomy. Where and what would be your last supper?

Tone Depth: Well I’m gonna answer this question in the context that it is my very last supper. I think it would have to be Maggie Oakes in Montreal.
