James Blake opens up about mental health and depression

The British artist talked about the controversial topic.

James Blake took part on a discussion panel entitled “You Got This: Managing the Suicide Crisis in the Arts Population” that was recently celebrated at Orange County, California.

In the discussion the musician spoke about the mental problems he has been suffering thru his career because of poor mental maturity and poor health habits. “I would say that chemical imbalance due to diet and the deterioration of my health was a huge, huge factor in my depression and eventual suicidal thoughts.” He adds, “I developed [dietary] intolerances that would lead to existential depression on a daily basis. I would eat a certain thing and then all day I would feel like there was just no point.”

Having just turn 20 years old and reaching the top of success all over the world, he brought up the fact that he was taken out of normal life too young and that is why his connection with other people was nothing more than superficial, therefore he has not real bonds with people to share his anxiety and depression. “Your connection to other people becomes surface level [while touring],” he said. “So if you were only in town for one day and someone asked you how you are, you go into the good stuff… which generally doesn’t involve how anxious you feel [or] how depressed you feel.”
