Afrobeat legend Tony Allen has passed away

The circumstances of his death remain unknown.

Tony Allen rose to prominence as the musical director for Fela & Africa ’70, recording some 30 albums with Fela Kuti and inventing the basics for what would become known as Afrobeat.

On his musical career he worked with several important names from Air to Damon Albarn. In 2015, he joined the Moritz Von Oswald Trio, recording what would become ‘Sounding Lines’. Recently, he even collaborated with Jeff Mills on his ‘Tomorrow Comes The Harvest’ EP. A force to be reckoned with, Allen continued to tour and collaborate up to the time of his death.

Brian Eno remembered Tony Allen as ‘perhaps the greatest drummer who has ever lived’.
