Apple says goodbye to the iPod

The end comes after 21 years.

Apple has announced that the brand will discontinue the manufacturing of its groundbreaking iPod. The original device was first released back in 2001, with the capacity to store 1000 songs, an astounding number back at the turn of the century.

Now, 21 years after, Apple confirmed that it will no longer produce MP3 players. ‘Today, the spirit of iPod lives on,’ Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing, Greg Joswiak, said in a statement. ‘Music has always been part of our core at Apple, and bringing it to hundreds of millions of users in the way iPod did impact more than just the music industry — it also redefined how music is discovered, listened to, and shared.’

While the iPod has not been updated since 2019, Apple’s iPod Touch will remain on sale ‘while supplies last’.
