Darem Aissa – Ylang Ylang – Suleiman

New out this week is an EP on Canadian label Suleiman which features a rather impressive selection of remixes including both Dave Aju and Jay Tripwire. The original track from label owner Darem Aissa is also a rather impressive composition which titled ‘Ylang Ylang’ forms the foundation of the EP.

Darem Aissa seems to be relatively new on the scene with an output of original music directed towards his own label, but his consistent style of stripped back grooves with crisp sound design and deep atmosphere suggests he is a name to keep an eye on, as no doubt this will not be the last thing of note that we hear from him.

The original has tribal style percussion with some trippy vocals and what sounds like a Jamaican style steel drum adding to the summery vibe of the track. Circus Company regular Dave Aju is also known for releases on many other high profile labels including a recent outing on Ostgut Ton.

Dave Aju’s roughed up remix uses less of the vocal with the bassline becoming more of a prominent feature and creative use of FX to give the rework an all-round trippy style.

Jay Tripwire is the last track on the release, and his rework is very different from the original. With a minimal vibe and warped pads the vocals still make an appearance as spare textures, but this dark and misty version is based mainly round the Ylang Ylang’s percussion.

Covering a broad spectrum of sound ranging from tech house to minimal this stripped back EP is in a similar style to tINI or the classic works of Loco Dice.
