Ejeca: ‘I like the idea of stepping out of my comfort zone’

Ejeca aka Garry McCartney is one of Belfast’s best musical exports in recent years from the growing scene in Northern Ireland. His down-to-earth attitude has allowed him to gain recognition from his musical peers and with constant solid releases it’s always been music first, hype later.

Now established as a reputable purveyor of high quality house and techno, and with his label Exploris now on their tenth release it’s safe to say his selection of tracks is always on the pulse. His recent releases on Sasha’s Last Night On Earth, BPitch! Control, Poker Flat and official remix for Inner City’s ‘Good Life’ has shown his varying side from from the melodic to driving sides of techno.

We had the chance to talk with him ahead of his new Last Night on Earth’s ‘Dizorn’ release.

Electronic Groove: Hi Ejeca, thanks for taking the time to chat with us and congrats for your new ‘Last Night on Earth’ release. What was the inspiration to produce this EP?

Ejeca: It’s been 14 months since my last EP on LNOE, so my music has changed a good bit. I’ve invested a lot in hardware over the past year and these are used a lot in the tracks. Dizorn’s sounds mainly come from jamming on my new Moog.

EG: This is not the first time you produce for LNOE. In terms of style and sound, what’s the difference with this new work compared to past ones on the same label?

Ejeca: I would say my tracks are tougher compared to my first EP, although there is always a melodic side to them. The label has come on leaps and bounds and I’m glad to be back with them.

EG: You are about to start a series of Live performances. What’s the motivation to proceed with this new venture?

Ejeca: I’ve become very comfortable with new bits of hardware, and always put up live jam videos on the net and they get a good reaction. I’ve also a lot of unreleased tracks and remixes that have never seen the light of day. DJing is a great passion that I’ve done for fifteen years but I guess I like the idea of stepping out of my comfort zone.

EG: Will you continue with your DJ gigs and is the Live performance something that will carry on for some time?

Ejeca: I was blown away by Plastikman live when I was young, and never thought I’d be able to pull together my own live show but I have. I guess the key is to make it sound good and interactive, DJing will always be something I do as there’s so much good mu-sic about from other artists. EJECA Live will be a way to channel the music I make that hasn’t been released.

EG: Now that the winter is almost over, how is your summer looking?

Ejeca: Apart from serious BBQing, the summer is looking busy. Looking forward to getting back out to Australia in May, and I’m headlining the Boiler Room at AVA Festival in Belfast my hometown, should be great fun!

EG: What’s on the pipeline for Exploris?

Ejeca: I got the 10th release out before the end of last year. This year I’m going to continue supporting Irish acts and music I feel needs to be heard. I’ve also a lot of old tracks that I might release as an LP, a sort of Lost Tapes idea for some of my housier and ambient stuff.

EG: Can you share with us your top 3 tracks during the last couple of months?

Ejeca: Sure, they are

  1. Tangerine Dream – Love On A Real Train – very old but I’ve only recently started listening to them.
  2. DMX Krew – Spiritual Encounter (Hypercolour)
  3. Thomas Hessler – Reflections (Index)

Ejeca’s ‘Dizorn’ drops March 17th on Last night on Earth.
