Mihalis Safras: “I am feeling blessed to be working so closely with one of the most important figures in our scene”

Mihalis Safras is a DJ with numerous awards and nominations on the electronic music movement. The house specialist has worked with many labels such as Relief, Hot Creations and of course his own label, Material.

Today, he celebrates his latest single ‘Pez’ and shares some insights of his current musical situation.

Electronic Groove: Hey Mihalis, thanks for your time to chat with us. Your most recent release ‘Pez’ brings a collaboration with Green Velvet. How was the experience to produce with him?

Mihalis Safras: This is our third single together this year, I am feeling blessed to be working so closely with one of the most important figures in our scene. There are many, many positive things that come from working with Curtis, but I would say that the most important thing is the amount of laughter between us. That is something really special.

EG: What was the inspiration behind this track?

Mihalis Safras: The ‘Pez’ in the title is a reference to those small candies you get in the weird dispensers, so that was that. Was just something good inside my head… as the vocals say.

EG: You are always dropping new music, can you mention your recent and/or upcoming releases?

Mihalis Safras: Besides the three collaboration singles I have had with Green Velvet I have a forthcoming EP with Prok n Fitch on Kaluki, a remix for Claptone and a massive EP on Relief in October! There is also something I am working on for Roger Sanchez, and more planned beyond that even. It’s been a very creative year for me and I’m happy to have the opportunity to work with so many great creative artists and labels.

EG: Anything planned on your own label, Material Series?

Mihalis Safras: Yes, lots! We have some great EP’s coming up in the following months from acts I respect a lot like Joeski, Raffa FL, Yvan Genkins and Leon. We’re really trying to give a fresh push to the label with music that won’t be so generic and will last longer than just a few weeks. I think with the music and artists we have coming up that will definitely be the case.

EG: How’s your summer agenda looking like? Any particular gig you are especially looking forward?

Mihalis Safras: I have to say that Creamfields is the one that I’m really counting down the days. It’s going to be great!

EG: Can you mention some of your favorite worldwide clubs?

Mihalis Safras: If I do I would probably be punched by the promoters of the clubs I didn’t mention (laughs), but have to say that I love most of the Ibiza dancefloors; there’s something magical about the clubs there.

EG: What would be your advice for new and aspiring producers?

Mihalis Safras: To stay focused on what they do. Don’t listen too much to criticism or what people suggest, because you need to have your own vision. Be humble and patient till your work shines. Finally and most importantly, never give up.

EG: Can you share a few of your favorite tunes that you will be playing during this summer?

Mihalis Safras: My sets are usually 99% my own productions so you can expect a lot of nasty tech house. At the moment my favorite track of mine is a track called ‘Body Work’ which is another upcoming collab with Green Velvet and will be out towards the end of the year.
