Nhii: “Artists can be role models and show how to live a sustainable life”

This may also be rooted in the firm believe, that all beings, animals and plants, have souls just like you. Nhii wants to mirror this truth in its productions and awake awareness to dancers and listeners all over this beautiful planet. This love of truth and veneration for the seekers of truth is an important ingredient to Nhii’s daily life.

Emilie McGlone, founder of Parties4Peace, had a chat with New York-based artist Nhii in order to celebrate United Nations World Oceans Day on June 8th.

Electronic Groove: Hey Nhii, thanks for your time today. Tell us about your music career… How you got started?

Nhii: Hello! It was a slow process. I started DJing as a hobby when I was 15 with my best friend on random Hifi equipment. After months of saving up money we bought turntables and a mixer, and suddenly I was practicing every day for many hours till I was 18 and we could run our own parties. When I finished school I was already DJing 3-4 times a week on a regular basis so I could afford to go to a university for Audio Engineering at SAE. After I received my degree I started to get more and more into music production.

EG: How would you describe your music, and what inspires you to create?

Nhii: I create borderless powerful yet emotional electronic world music. Nhii is a bottomless journey of musical growth with no boundaries in a universal context” is what I proclaim in my bio and it is my credo all the way. An exchange of human love through the experience of music.

When it comes to inspiration, New York can be an overwhelming sound pot and all the influences can carry you away. On the other hand, I experience an enormous variety of cultures, which alone is great inspiration and driver especially when you create.

EG: Thinking about the oceans… What do you personally love about the ocean?

Nhii: The oceans are the reason why we live. It is the source of all life. I always saw them as a magical and undeniable pretty habitat for all kinds of species, yet it still carries many secrets. To score sounds to something related to oceans is a privilege.

EG: This year for the United Nations World Oceans Day, the 2020 theme is ‘Innovation for a Sustainable Ocean’. How do you think artists can contribute to supporting ocean conservation?

Nhii: The strength of artists is to raise awareness and bring relevant topics to a bigger audience. In many cases, artists can be role models and show how to live a sustainable life even though traveling makes it hard. A plant-based lifestyle is a great way to support ocean conservation as animal agriculture has a devastating impact on the oceans and the environment as a whole. Animal agricultural operations produce massive amounts of waste that pollute streams, rivers, and the oceans, and run-off such as pesticides, fertilizers, antibiotics, and nutrients from operations producing crops to feed the massive number of farmed animals pollutes the water as well – and can even lead to ocean dead zones. Methane emissions from factory farms contribute significantly to climate change and ocean acidification.

EG: Parties4Peace is a non-profit organization working to promote a culture of peace through music and art – how do you think music can have a positive impact on the world?

Nhii: Music is an amplifier for emotions and emotions impact us as humans. We follow our feelings more than anything else. There is nothing more liberating and peaceful than a dance floor. Dancing together as one race while showing each other respect and love is causing powerful positive emotions. That is exactly why I support Parties4Peace and stand behind promoting peace through music and art.
