WhoMadeWho: “We are full of amazing experiences from the connection with people during our live set”

Nowhere Events is set to present WhoMadeWho’s ‘UUUU’ album launch party this Saturday, September 24th, 2022. The gathering will take place at London’s KOKO (1A Camden High Street), starting at 10 PM. For this very special occasion, WhoMadeWho will also be joined by special guest Jan Blomqvist (live), and further support will be provided by Rockin Moroccin.

‘UUUU’ means a lot to us. The album points towards new adventures both in the studio and playing live around the world. It’s very clean and yet very playful at the same time. Inspired by both ’90s and 00s Electronica and 80s Post-Disco, stylistically ‘UUUU’ is still kept within our own WhoMadeWho indie-club frame. We worked with the producer Rampa from Keinemusik on the album. He pushed us at times when we were stuck, he changed multiple demos of ours that were heading for the trash and turned them into great songs. He also worked brilliantly, finding the core essence of our extensive levels of creative inputs. Not an easy task, since we are often all over the place. ‘UUUU’ is loaded with new colors. Kat Frankie joined us on several tracks, giving us an inspiring female counterpart. Also, Frank Wiedeman, Jens Kuross, Davide Rossi, AVA4K, and others helped us levitate. We have tried to make the album a voyage and a psychedelic trip to the best of our abilities. We hope you like it.’ say WhoMadeWho about their new record.

Ahead of their ‘UUUU’ album launch party at KOKO’s, EG caught up with WhoMadeWho to learn more about the drop of ‘UUUU’, the upcoming event, their writing process, and more.

EG: Hi guys! Welcome back to EG. Always a pleasure to have you here with us. Where are you based right now? How have you been?

WhoMadeWho: It has been a very busy summer in Europe. We are full of amazing experiences from the connection with people during our live set.

We all live in Copenhagen but travel a lot. At this moment, I just woke up at 6 in the morning in Chicago due to jet lag. We are on the second day of our North American ‘UUUU’ album tour. Going to Boston and New York this weekend.

EG: So, Summer’s almost over…What has yours been like? Any particular highlights?

WhoMadeWho: There have been many highlights this summer. For me personally, playing a sunrise show in Cappadocia (Turkey), a beautiful mountain area, was an amazing experience. Or seeing Tomas Barfod from the band playing back-to-back with Black Coffee in Ibiza after our set was extraordinary.

EG: By the way, congratulations on the release of your 7th studio album, ‘UUUU’! How has it been received? Were you confident ahead of its release, or is there always an element of self-doubt there?

WhoMadeWho: We are very grateful for the way ‘UUUU’ has been received. People have been very positive about it. It feels to me like an album with a red thread running through it. This I believe is due to the co-operation we had with Rampa. He gave us inspiration and pushed us into new areas. He helped us use our creative powers in the best way. Like in any relationship, you as a band can have zones and areas where you get a little stuck. On this seventh album, the key was these new eyes to “pick up all the flowers”.

EG: What are your favorite highlights from ‘UUUU’? Any cherishable moments from the recording sessions you can share with us?

WhoMadeWho: The title track ‘UUUU’ is an interesting example of our work with Rampa. He was very persistent about the instrumental, and we didn’t really manage to come up with good vocals. Then, we reached out to our Berlin-based songwriter friend Kat Frankie, who basically did a big load of different melodies and free jazzy stuff. Tomas Barfod then made a rough edit and painted a vocal structure where he used the voice like an instrument. Thereafter, Tomas Høffding re-sung a couple of the melody lines and we had it made.

EG: And now Nowhere Events is set to present your ‘UUUU’ launch party at London’s KOKO with Jan Blomqvist and Rockin Moroccin! What can we expect from this particular show?

WhoMadeWho: We have been playing the new live set for a while and feel very confident about it. Looking forward to coming back to London. Also looking forward to playing with our good friend Jan Blomqvist, who just returned from The Black Rock Desert. It’s gonna be an epic night!

EG: How complex is it for you guys to translate your songs from the studio to the stage? Have you ever recorded something that was “too complex” to recreate in a live setting?

WhoMadeWho: Live is always different than the recordings. Live needs to be more clear and simple indeed. We’ve made loads of songs that are great recordings but simply don’t translate so well to the live setting.

Nowhere Events will host WhoMadeWho’s album launch party this Saturday, September 24th, 2022 alongside Jan Blomqvist and Rockin Moroccin at KOKO’s London. Purchase your tickets here.

EG: With all this traveling you guys usually do…any new books, movies, or series you’d recommend? How do you keep yourself entertained during trips?

WhoMadeWho: Generally we try to work, create and compose while traveling. For inspiration, we listen to music and podcasts also. When tired Netflix is also a friend, but like a drug also. Trying to keep that down. Yesterday I enjoyed listening on Spotify to ‘Global Underground #43’ with Joris Voorn.

EG: What are your thoughts on the current state of the scene? What would you like to see more and less of?

WhoMadeWho: We think it is a great time for music. Since everybody has been locked down during the pandemic, it is great to have the connection on again between the artist and the live audience. Humans need humans. It’s so fundamental. I don’t need to see more live living room streamings.

EG: What’s next for WhoMadeWho? What particular milestones are you looking forwards to now?

WhoMadeWho: Big, unannounced festivals coming soon!

EG: Thank you so much for your time, guys! We wish you all the best for the future.

WhoMadeWho: Thanks EG! See you all on the dancefloor at KOKO’s!
