New Faces: Senses Of Mind

Making their debut on Labyrinth Clubs’ record label, Labyrinth Music are Senses of Mind. The mysterious duo are regulars on Steyoyoke, Proton and Somatic bringing a fresh approach to progressive house. Known for their open-minded music policy, Labyrinth Music has chosen club residents, Joyhauser and Kevin de Vries to remix on this EP, which marks the re-launch of the label since 2017, after taking a 2 year hiatus.

We caught up with Senses of Mind to talk about their latest release ‘Origins’ to be out on Labyrinth Music.

Electronic Groove: What’s your real name, and where you were born?

Senses Of Mind: Our names are Kynan Nonneman and Miles Vanderlooven, both born in Antwerp, Belgium.

EG: Describe your music in 3 words?

Senses Of Mind: Uplifting, atmospheric and driven.

EG: Where are you based?

Senses Of Mind: We are based in Burcht, a small village in Antwerp and we live two streets apart.

EG: What labels have you released on in your career?

Senses Of Mind: So far we have released on Steyoyoke, Somatic, Proton, Definition:Music, Kanvas. We have upcoming releases on Labyrinth Music and Awen Records.

EG: Can you tell us 3 artists you aspire to / have influenced you?

Senses Of Mind: Tale Of Us: The first time we saw them was a few years ago on Extrema Outdoor Belgium. They started with ‘North Star’, we never heard something like that before, since then they have inspired us tremendously.

Ten Walls: When ‘Walking With Elephants’ came out in 2014, it truly felt like a new experience. We are so honored to play a set before Ten Walls will take control at ONIYA Boat Party in Antwerp on September 14th.

Colyn: We discovered him on the new Afterlife compilation. He brings something new and refreshing. It would be amazing to make a track with him together one day.

EG: How long have you been producing music? What was your first signed release?

Senses Of Mind: Our careers started out totally different.

Kynan: I have been producing for about 7 years and was influenced by deep house and techno.

Miles: I have been producing for about 14 years and started out producing UK influenced music such as UK garage. Gradually I started growing more into a UK house producer and that happened around the same time we met for the first time. We always listened and gave feedback on each other’s productions back then. By spending lots of time together in the studio and sharing our stories and passion, we have become what we are now. After a couple of years, we finally decided to team up. Kynan came with an idea for a new project and Senses Of Mind was born. After loads of trials and errors in the studio we finally came up with our own “sound”. We saw this as the start of something great.

EG: Three things you can’t live without on the road when touring?

Senses Of Mind: Laptop, headphones, and Ableton Live. We just start touring, so we need to discover (laughs).

EG: Can you tell us about your next release?

Senses Of Mind: Our next release is coming out on Labyrinth Music on the 27th of September, featuring two big remixes by Kevin De Vries and Joyhauser. Our track contains middle eastern influences surrounded by dark analog synths melodies. We not gonna tell you more about it, it is up to you to discover what you can feel & find in our track.

There will also be a release party with us, Kevin De Vries and Joyhauser on that same date at Labyrinth Club (BE). For more info click here >> bit.ly/2lT0Rr3

EG: One piece of advice you can give to other aspiring producers?

Senses Of Mind: Make as much music as there is time for it. Go out regularly to discover new things to inspire you in the studio. Combine classical or ethnic sounds with analog synths and digital sounds. Build communities with other aspiring producers and give each other feedback and tips.

Senses Of Mind’s ‘Origins’ will be out September 27th via Labyrinth Music. Grab your copy here.
