Berlin-based musician and sound artist Özcan Ertek has been recording as Seretan since his years in Istanbul, developing a strain of electronic hybrids shaped by influences ranging from ambient and experimental electronics to shoegaze and house. That mix of atmosphere, melody and rhythm comes into focus on “Golden Hour” the second single from his forthcoming EP ‘Sun Girl’. It feels like scenes straight from a daydream: dance music with a soft touch and a hazy, romantic spirit, offset by sharper edges.
The track moves between a steady downbeat and another, blurrier sense of time that seems to shift in and out of focus. Its rhythms remain present without taking complete control, leaving space for washed-out synths, reverb, and layers of noise to drift around them. Melodic arrangements stay deliberately simple, often moving between only a few notes and gradually expanding the space around them.
There is still a trace of dance music underneath, with a steady four-on-the-floor pulse running through the track as the layers around it continuously shift and blur. Repetition slowly changes the perception of time: sounds return, dissolve and reappear, while the track seems to move forward without ever quite leaving the same place. At its roughest, its hazy surfaces harden into something close to shoegaze, making the edges of Seretan’s sound more exposed.
With its open emotions and melodic hooks, “Golden Hour” feels like a slower, sun-faded continuation of Seretan’s earlier work, stretched outward and allowed to linger. It moves with the strange stillness of a landscape seen from a distance, broad enough to disappear into.
