Ostinato Records announces a rare 1980s Soviet dance music compilation

This anthology highlights the influence of Soviet Central Asian DJs and musicians on global culture.

Ostinato Records has recently announced ‘Synthesizing the Silk Roads: Uzbek Disco, Tajik Folktronica, Uyghur Rock & Crimean Tatar Jazz from 1980s Soviet Central Asia,’ an anthology of revolutionary and rarely heard dance music from the former USSR.

This 15-track compilation will be available digitally and on Bandcamp starting August 30th, 2024, with a vinyl release following on September 20th. The first track, ‘Tantsuyushchiy Ostrov (Dancing Island)’ by Angelina Petrosova, is already streaming on all digital platforms.

‘Synthesizing the Silk Roads’ highlights the impact of Soviet DJs and musicians from Central Asia, particularly Tashkent, on global culture. This anthology features rare 1980s vinyl, live TV recordings, and showcases diverse sounds from Soviet Uzbekistan and nearby regions.

The roots of this musical revolution trace back to the mass evacuation during World War II, leading to the establishment of the Tashkent Gramplastinok plant. Post-Stalin, Soviet music scenes flourished, and Tashkent became a vibrant hub for various artists. Despite challenges, including KGB repression, the region’s musicians thrived, contributing to a unique cultural legacy that helped unravel the Iron Curtain.
