Definitive Recordings, the Canadian house label founded by John Acquaviva, Richie Hawtin, and Karl Kowalski in 1992, unveils ‘The Definitive Selection Vol. 1’. The album features remastered classics alongside fresh material.
Recently acquired by Get Physical, Definitive Recordings has revisited its back catalogue with a series of Classics EPs and the ‘Disco House for All’ compilation. ‘The Definitive Selection Vol. 1’ dives even deeper, showcasing house cuts that pack a maximal punch from minimal elements.
The album kicks off with an edit of Blunted Dummies’ ‘House for All’, while Acquaviva’s Piled Witch Mix of ‘Out on the Dancefloor’ pairs filtered textures with minimal drums. Robotman’s ‘Look, Listen, Love’ also receives a fresh rework, adding to the compilation’s groove-laden flow.
Additional re-edits by Acquaviva include Omega Man’s ‘Freejack’ and a disco-tinged mix of Dance Fever’s ‘A Woman in Love’. Trax 4 Daze’s ‘Blow Your Horn’ shines with funky guitar riffs and playful trumpet stabs, while Eduardo Rossell’s rework of Acquaviva’s ‘Metal Detector’ burrows deep with menacing bass. A lo-fi Ring Tone Mix of ‘At Midnight’ features wild synth seances.
Closing in style, the compilation features ‘Fee Fi Fo Hum’ by Acquaviva and Olivier Giacomotto, a percussive house track with warped vocals, and the elastic basslines of ‘Hummer’.
Speaking about the project, Acquaviva said: “It’s been a lot of fun ‘crate digging’ through my collection of productions and the early Definitive Catalogue. Revisiting and reissuing these gems from the past in this compilation truly excites me for all that lies ahead and the new generation of Definitive.”
