Ira Sandler, the longtime owner and founder of the San Francisco institution 1015 Folsom, has passed away. The news was shared by venue booker DJ Dials, who described Sandler as a cultural figure whose influence extended far beyond the walls of the club he helped build over four decades.

Sandler took over the venue space in 1986, initially operating it as Das Klub before purchasing and relaunching it as 1015 Folsom in 1989. As electronic music culture expanded across the West Coast, the venue became one of San Francisco’s defining nightlife destinations, hosting everything from house and techno events to live concerts, fundraisers, salsa nights, and community gatherings.

Known for supporting artists and promoters early in their careers, Sandler played a key role in shaping the city’s club culture while fostering an inclusive environment that welcomed diverse scenes and audiences.

His impact continues to resonate through the generations of clubbers, artists, and creatives who passed through 1015 Folsom’s doors. While the venue remains active, Sandler’s contribution to San Francisco nightlife leaves an enduring mark on the city’s cultural history.
