At least 25 people have died after a fire tore through Birch by Romeo Lane, a nightlife venue in Arpora, Goa. The blaze broke out just after midnight on Saturday, December 6th, 2025, during a live music performance.

More than 100 people were reportedly inside the restaurant, cocktail bar, and nightclub when the fire began on the first floor, quickly spreading through the building. According to police, most of the victims were staff working in the basement, an area lacking proper emergency exits. Several tourists are also among the dead. Officials say the majority of fatalities resulted from suffocation, as many became trapped inside.

Though the venue was operating with valid licenses, a police report noted the absence of emergency exit doors on several levels. Fire crews worked through the night to contain the flames.

Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has ordered a formal inquiry into the incident and vowed “stringent action” against those found responsible. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the tragedy “deeply saddening.”

The event has sparked renewed demands for widespread fire safety audits across Goa’s nightlife venues, highlighting ongoing concerns about infrastructure oversight.
