The longtime bassist was 53.

Andy Barker, 808 State member, bassist, and keyboard player has passed away on Saturday, November 6th. 808 State confirmed the news via a message posted on the band’s social media accounts.

Founded by Graham Massey, Martin Price, and Gerald Simpson, 808 State was formed in Manchester, and rapidly became recognized as a force of nature during the halcyon days of the Haçienda and the acid house movement. 808 State released their debut album in 1998, before Gerald Simpson departed the band, with Baker joining the outfit as bassist and keyboard player.

‘It’s with a heavy heart I have to deliver the tragic news of the passing of Andy Barker — here is a statement from his immediate family,’ the statement said. ‘After a happy life, Andrew Barker experienced a short period of illness and passed away in his hometown of Manchester yesterday, Saturday 6th November. His family and friends ask that people respect their privacy at this time but remember him for the joy he brought through his personality and music. You’ll be sadly missed.’
