Join us as we delve into the mind of this rising star and explore the passion and creativity driving his ascent in the electronic music world.

EG: Hi, Ollie! Welcome to EG. It’s a pleasure to have you here with us. How have you been? Where are you right now?

Ollie Mundy: I’m great, thank you. The label has just launched and there’s loads going on. I’m currently in London.

EG: How is your summer going so far? Any particular highlights?

Ollie Mundy: Yes, it’s been a fantastic summer so far. It all started with an amazing trip to Ibiza to perform at the Back to Mine party at Pikes, followed by a brief visit to Secret Garden Party. And now, it seems like the perfect way to end the summer is by attending Burning Man.

EG: Now, congratulations on the release of your latest single, ‘Master Of The Ocean’! You must be excited to finally share this one. What has the initial reception been like so far?

Ollie Mundy: To be honest, I wasn’t sure how it was going to be received or even go down, but it’s been great. It got to #5 in the Melodic chart and #21 in the overall singles chart. So I’m super grateful to launch a new label and have it get some traction straight away.

EG: So, what can your fans expect to find on ‘Master Of The Ocean’? Is there a concept or emotional trigger driving this piece? What was the creative process for this one like?

Ollie Mundy: I had the opportunity to perform at a watersports festival in the Dominican Republic called ‘Master of the Ocean.’ The experience was incredibly inspiring, and on the final day, I sat on the beach with my laptop, headphones, and a couple of beers as I watched the athletes in action as the sunset. The foundation of the track came together swiftly during that moment. Upon returning to the UK, I connected with an exceptional Argentinian vocalist named Estefa Silvera and shared my vision with her. Within a week, we had brought it to life. It’s not often that my projects come together so seamlessly.

EG: And ‘Master Of The Ocean’ is the first release of your newly launched OVAVA Music imprint. Congratulations on this landmark moment. Why did you choose to kickstart the project with ‘Master Of The Ocean’?

Ollie Mundy: I decided to launch the label with this particular track as it truly embodies my preferred approach to music production. I aimed to capture the essence of the island, my personal experiences, the beauty of nature, the vibrant community, and even elements of sports. For me, starting projects with a wider perspective allows me to encapsulate the magic and essence before fine-tuning it in the studio.

EG: And what kind of music can we expect to come out of OVAVA Music?

Ollie Mundy: I have always appreciated a diverse range of sounds and never wanted to confine myself to a particular genre. Throughout my 20 years of playing and partying, I’ve been exposed to several musical styles, and I aspire to showcase this musical diversity both through my own work and that of new artists. However, I’m also conscious of maintaining a sense of coherence and ensuring that each release remains true to the OVAVA sound without feeling disjointed.

EG: Where would you like to see OVAVA in 5 or 10 years’ time? What place would you want OVAVA to occupy in the current landscape?

Ollie Mundy: My ultimate goal is to establish a community of individuals who share a passion for uplifting, sunshine-infused music and the joy of dancing. I envision creating a space where like-minded music lovers can come together, forge connections, and share unforgettable experiences in breathtaking and unique locations across the globe. Together, we can create a global network of individuals united by our love for beautiful soundscapes and the transformative power of music.

EG: Now, on to one of those hot current subjects… What’s your stance on AI? Do you see it driving the scene forward? Has any form of AI been applied in your recent productions or ‘Master Of The Ocean’?

Ollie Mundy: It is quite daunting to consider that we are just scratching the surface of the capabilities of AI, and yet it is already remarkably powerful. While I use AI in my e-commerce business for various purposes, the idea of integrating it into music production is a realm where I remain very hesitant. I have dabbled with stem-splitting platforms for creating edits, but I haven’t explored AI further in my music projects. For me, the essence of creating music lies in the process and the happy accidents that arise during the journey. If one appreciates the art of music-making or DJing, that creative spark will always endure.

EG: Finally, what can we expect from Ollie Mundy in the next months? Where can your fans catch you playing live?

Ollie Mundy: I’m excited that I have several releases out on OVAVA, as well as two 2-track EPs on Sondela Records and My Other Side of the Moon. Next week, I’ll be heading to Burning Man, where I am performing at MAXA CAMP’s Deer on Monday night from 12-1:30am. I invite you to come and find me in the dusty deep playa. I’m heading to Cape Town over New Year’s. So I’m hoping to fill the diary up while I’m there.

EG: Thank you so much for your time, Ollie! We wish you all the best for the future. Take care!

Ollie Mundy: Amazing, thanks guys. Great talking to you.
