Jamaican reggae legend Jimmy Cliff has passed away due to a seizure followed by pneumonia, according to an official statement shared via his Instagram account. The artist was 81 years old.
The announcement, written by his spouse, expresses gratitude for the outpouring of love from fans across the world, emphasizing how their support served as a source of strength throughout Cliff’s career. The message also thanks Dr. Couceyro and the medical staff for their dedicated support during his final days.
“Jimmy, my darling, may you rest in peace. I will follow your wishes. I hope you all can respect our privacy during these hard times,” the statement reads. It is signed by Latifa, Lilty, and Aken, concluding with: “See you and we see you Legend.”
Jimmy Cliff was born in Jamaica on November 24th, 1944, and achieved success with the 1969 single ‘Wonderful World, Beautiful People,’ which Bob Dylan called the best protest song ever written.
His international success came with ‘The Harder They Come,’ written expressly for the film of the same name, in which he played Ivan Martin, a young man trying to enter the corrupt Jamaican music industry.
Other recordings include the Grammy-winning albums ‘Cliff Hanger’ (1985) and ‘Rebirth’ (2012). Cliff was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2010.
Further details will be released at a later date.
