Bandcamp has updated its content guidelines to explicitly ban music created using generative AI tools. In a statement published on January 13th, 2025, the platform declared that it will no longer allow music “generated wholly or in a substantial part” by artificial intelligence, citing its commitment to human creativity.
The company emphasized that the decision is designed to ensure that “fans have confidence that the music they find on Bandcamp was created by humans,” and to support artists in continuing to make music in a digital ecosystem.
The policy also prohibits the use of AI to imitate existing artists or musical styles, aligning with Bandcamp’s existing rules on impersonation and intellectual property infringement. Users are encouraged to report any music suspected of being AI-generated, with the company reserving the right to remove such content.
“We believe that the human connection found through music is a vital part of our society and culture,” the statement reads. “With this policy, we’re putting human creativity first.”
