South African DJ and producer DESIREE has released a new remix of Nina Simone’s ‘Four Women’, out now via Verve Label Group. The release marks 60 years since the original and forms part of Verve’s ongoing ‘Year of Nina’ series.
Revisiting one of Simone’s most recognized works, DESIREE approaches the track with a focus on preservation and reinterpretation. Rather than altering its message, the remix reframes the original through a contemporary lens, maintaining its themes while introducing new rhythmic elements for the dancefloor.
“There are songs that already say everything. ‘Four Women’ is one of them. The deeper I got into Nina Simone’s world, the more I felt it speaking directly to me. When I came to make this remix, I didn’t want to change what it meant. I just wanted to bring it somewhere new, somewhere you could move to it, lose yourself in it, and still feel every word,” says DESIREE.
The production blends a driving bassline with layered synth work, while preserving Simone’s vocal presence. A recurring piano motif anchors the track, acting as a connection between the original recording and DESIREE’s interpretation.
The remix follows previous contributions to the ‘Year of Nina’ campaign and highlights a continued effort to introduce Simone’s catalogue to new audiences through contemporary electronic artists.
