New York producer, DJ, and label founder Derek Marin has died. A source close to the artist confirmed that he passed away on Friday, July 31, 2026. No cause of death was disclosed.
Also known through aliases including Modest D, Platonik, and PLOY, Marin was a longstanding presence in New York’s underground house and techno scene before later relocating to Berlin. His productions drew from minimal, tech house, and acid, with releases appearing on Thoughtless Music, Plastic City, Get Physical, Superfreq, Little Helpers, Nervous, and Toolroom.
In 2001, Marin launched Faucet Music, which became central to a broader network of imprints including Subtrak Records, Like Button, and Modest Music. Across more than three decades, he developed an extensive catalogue, collaborated with artists across the international underground scene, and worked as a soundtrack composer.
Marin also performed at venues including Golden Gate, Gretchen, and Minimal Bar in Berlin, as well as Polygon, Eris, and Louie & Chan in New York.
