The new features will be introduced in June at no additional cost.
Apple Music has added lossless format to its streaming catalog at no additional cost. The music streaming platform is also adding the option to reproduce ‘spatial audio’ with support for Dolby Atmos, the kind of 3D sound that was introduced in the AirPods Pro and AirPods Max.
Not all music will be reproduced on the new ‘spatial audio’ quality at first. Apple will be verifying names, with artists like Ariana Grande, The Weeknd, and J Balvin supporting this feature from the beginning. The US-based company is making its entire catalog of 75 million songs available as lossless audio using Apple’s ALAC codec.
The tech giant says the lossless tier starts at CD quality, which is 16-bit at 44.1 kHz and goes up to 24-bit at 48 kHz. For the true audiophile, Apple Music also offers Hi-Resolution Lossless files up to 24-bit 192kHz. It’s unclear if these additional, higher-quality versions are also included at no additional cost. The new features will be available to users from June.
