Artist Of The Month: Yulia Niko

Berlin-based DJ and producer Yulia Niko stands out in the electronic music scene, not just for her intricate soundscapes but for the deeply personal narratives that underpin her work. The recent release of her debut album, ‘TWINSOUL’, a project that transcends conventional electronic music albums, which was timed to coincide with International Women’s Day, is a poignant tribute to her late father and represents a milestone in her evolution as an artist.

The journey to this point has been anything but straightforward. Yulia’s path has taken her from the sun-drenched shores of Anapa, Russia, to the gritty streets of New York City, and finally to the vibrant, eclectic music scene of Berlin. Each of these locations has left an indelible mark on her music, but it was a life-changing event in her teenage years that truly set her on this path.

At 15, Yulia was involved in a severe car accident that left her hospitalized for two months. This incident became a turning point in her life. Isolated and immobile, she found solace in the rhythms of old Ibiza discs and classic house records. The music served as a refuge, a space where she could escape her physical pain and envision a future shaped by sound. This experience became the catalyst for her first DJ gig at 16, setting her on a course that would eventually lead her to the global stage.

Niko’s ambition led her to New York, where she immersed herself in the city’s dynamic music scene. The transition from the small clubs of Anapa to the bustling venues of New York was both exhilarating and challenging. “New York was my school of life,” she once reflected. “It was a tough city, but it gave me the foundation I needed.” It was here that she honed her craft, developing a sound that blended the minimal techno she loved with the rich, melodic influences she discovered through her encounters with other artists.

One of the most significant influences on her sound was Damian Lazarus of Crosstown Rebels. His guidance pushed her to explore more intricate melodies, adding layers of complexity to her music. This evolution was evident in her ‘Manifesto’ EP, released on Watergate Records in 2020, which marked her arrival on the international scene.

Berlin offered Yulia the creative freedom she needed to fully develop her sound. The city’s vibrant underground scene, with its focus on artistry over commercial success, provided the perfect environment for her to experiment and grow. Her residency at Watergate, one of Berlin’s most iconic clubs, further solidified her status in the electronic music community.

‘TWINSOUL’ is the culmination of Yulia’s experiences and influences, a deeply personal project that reflects her growth as an artist. The album is not just a collection of tracks but a carefully crafted narrative that explores themes of loss, resilience, and rebirth. Her decision to include live instruments and original vocals, including her own on the track ‘Satisfaction’, adds an emotional depth to the album that sets it apart from her previous work.

While preparing for her recent live tour, Yulia reflects on the challenges and rewards of performing. “I always have a fear that people will not come, or they will come but I will forget my USB,” she says, half-joking. Despite these anxieties, she is eager to bring ‘TWINSOUL’ to life on stage, where her connection with the audience becomes a vital part of the experience.

Looking ahead, Yulia envisions a future where her work extends beyond the DJ booth. Having studied as a yoga teacher, she sees parallels between the two professions. “If I ever decide to quit, I think I would really enjoy working as a yoga instructor. It’s about connecting with people, making them feel better,” she says.

For Yulia, the release of ‘TWINSOUL’ and its deluxe edition is not just a professional milestone but a personal triumph. It’s a testament to her resilience, her ability to transform pain into beauty, and her unwavering commitment to her craft. As she continues to evolve as an artist, one thing remains constant: her belief in the power of music to heal, inspire, and connect.
