Aslice, a revenue-sharing platform for the music industry founded by DJ DVS1 in 2022, has announced its closure. The platform aimed to create a more equitable ecosystem by allowing DJs to share earnings with producers of tracks played during sets.
During its two-year run, Aslice facilitated the sharing of over $422,000 from 935 DJs to 27,000+ producers worldwide, analyzing about 7,400 playlists. An external review praised the platform’s impact on industry fairness.
However, financial challenges led to its closure, with annual costs of $250,000 and revenue of only $63,000. Despite this, Aslice raised significant awareness about fair compensation in the music industry.
In their farewell statement, the company emphasized the power of collective action. The platform’s closure leaves questions about future advocacy for industry fairness while offering both caution and inspiration for similar initiatives.
Also, influential DJ and producer Richie Hawtin shared a significant post in which he displayed his frustration and disappointment with his musical peers for the demise of Aslice. You can watch Hawtin’s post here.
