All profits go to labels and artists.
At the end of March, with the global lockdown underway and the uncertain future for all the artists who depend on their music to survive, Bandcamp decided not to charge their commission to all the sales made on their platform throughout a full day.
The initiative was a total success reaching 800,000 sales (when on a normal Friday the platform usually makes an average of 47,000 sales) and a total of US$ 4.3 million that will go entirely to labels and artists.
In addition, on these Fridays, numerous labels joined the Bandcamp initiative and announced that they would also forgo their own commission and transfer 100% of sales to the artists, so the economic benefit for them could be even greater.
The success of the initiative motivated the platform to continue repeating the formula during the first Fridays of May, June, and July, managing to raise around US$ 20 million.
Last night, with the pandemic still on the horizon and the performances of the artists still in an uncertain future, Bandcamp announced that it would continue with it during all the first Fridays of each month until the end of the year. Therefore, next August 7th a new edition of these self-proclaimed Bandcamp Fridays will be held again.
