The record is comprised of 13 new tracks.
3 years after his groundbreaking collaborative album with singer Chico Mann, DJ/producer Captain Planet returns with ‘BIG MAN ft. Shungudzo’, the first cut from his upcoming ‘NO VISA’ album, which is out now on Bastard Jazz Recordings.
‘NO VISA’ is Charlie Wilder’s 5th full-length album as Captain Planet, and it is both a return to form and a launchpad into the future. The record contains 13 songs, featuring vocalists from around the world. Wilder’s trademark sound pulls from African, Caribbean, Middle Eastern and South American styles of music, blended with the Hip Hop, Reggae, House, and Electronic music that he grew up playing as a DJ.
The video for ‘BIG MAN ft. Shungudzo’ was created by Steph Hope, who uses a traditional half-analogue technique of drawing on paper and then coloring and compiling digitally. According to her, she spoke to Charlie about ‘his initial ideas for the video and he had the image of a seed growing in mind, sprouting from a tiny inhospitable space and becoming a massive plant. This seemed to tie in nicely with Shungudzo’s lyrics about the ambition to one day become the biggest and best’.
‘With each project, I usually like to try to do something that I haven’t done before and have been wanting to try out, both with technique and imagery. After I got a feel for the song’s themes this time it was definitely giant growing female bodybuilders in a cityscape environment that ticked those boxes, so I had a lot of fun animating this video’, says Hope.
Captain Planet is also hosting a virtual album listening party for ‘NO VISA’ on Wednesday, July 1st. The transmission will start at 5 PM California / 8 PM NYC, via the artist’s Zoom page.
