Canadian electro-funk duo Chromeo are bringing retro vibes back with the release of a limited-edition cassette version of their latest LP, ‘Album Contemporary’. To accompany the release, the band is also offering a custom-designed chrome cassette player in partnership with French cassette company We Are Rewind.
The cassette tape comes with two exclusive bonus tracks, making it a must-have for collectors and fans of Chromeo’s signature funk-inspired sound. The chrome-plated cassette player is a sleek and modernized take on the classic device, featuring rechargeable batteries to merge nostalgia with contemporary functionality.
In a press statement, Romain Boudruche, CEO of We Are Rewind, expressed excitement about the collaboration: “Chromeo has such a distinct sound and style, so the pressure was on to design a cassette player that captured that. The shiny chrome cassette player is a truly unique music player that’s bound to turn heads and bring back the funk.”
This release taps into the growing trend of physical music formats. According to an April 2023 survey by the UK’s largest vinyl packaging firm Key Production, Gen Z is leading the revival of physical formats, including vinyl, CDs, and cassettes. Cassette sales, particularly, have seen a steady resurgence, growing for the tenth consecutive year in 2022. Notably, cassettes contributed to more than 10% of record sales for ten UK No. 1 albums last year.
