Healing the world on the dancefloor: CLO’s electronic evolution

CLO, the former frontwoman of electro-pop rock band We are Enfant Terrible, is pushing boundaries with her latest project—a remix EP of ‘Ces Futurs’ that showcases her evolution from pop singer to electronic music curator.

Drawing from her diverse musical background, she’s collaborated with producers like You Man and emerging talents from Mexico’s vibrant electronic scene.

Her artistic philosophy centers on authenticity and emotional connection, using music as both personal therapy and a bridge to her audience. This approach has shaped her upcoming vinyl release, limited to a special edition dropping in April 2025, and influenced her plans for an intimate mini-tour across France.

In this conversation with EG, CLO opens up about balancing artistic integrity with the demands of today’s digital music landscape, her creative process in transforming pop songs into dancefloor anthems, and her mission to “heal the world on the dancefloor”.

EG: Hi, CLO! Welcome to EG. It’s a pleasure to have you here with us. How have you been? Where are you right now? How did you kickstart the year?

CLO: Hi EG, thanks for the warm welcome! I am actually on a train to Paris, going to play a DJ set tonight. 2025 starts pretty great with cool music collabs I did for this remix EP so I am proud and motivated.

EG: First of all, congratulations on the incoming drop of your remix EP for ‘Ces Futurs’! You must be stoked to share these new takes. What has the initial reception been like so far?

CLO: Thanks again! Yes, I am really excited and happy because we worked for a few months on these remixes and I was looking forward to sharing them with my audience. I am so delighted to hear people’s enthusiasm about those tracks, we really gave the songs a “dancefloor twist” and I love it.

EG: So, what can your fans expect to find on this remix edition of ‘Ces Futurs’? What was it that made you feel like these stories had more to be told?

CLO: Actually when I made the album I used my pop singer skills. I made songs to listen to, for example in the car on a road trip, feel emotions with the lyrics, and share some real pop music vibes. I use music writing as a real therapy every day and I love the idea that songs could be part of a journey. But I am also a DJ and I love to make people dance to every kind of music. So, one of my favorite things is to play remixes because you revisit the track with another vibe. And it makes you feel a new emotion.

EG: What was the process of selecting the remixers like? Did you have a prior connection to any of them?

CLO: Of course, they are all musicians I admire for their great work and productions. I know some of them personally like You Man, we grew up in the same city in the north of France and I’ve listened to their hit ‘Birdcage’ at least a million times. So, I was so happy that they put their electronic creative vibe for a new version of ‘Cheveux Longs Cheveux Courts’ to make a real 90s dancefloor anthem. Some of the remixers are from Mexico, which is a country that inspired me a lot. I had the chance to tour there a few years ago and it was one of the best experiences of my life. The energy in Mexico is amazing and I really feel that something new and cool is happening there. You can feel it with the remixes from Tonga Conga, Koko CeCe, and WOLF, they are all very strong and they bring a very fresh and new Latin vibe.

EG: In a way, is this the end of ‘Ces Futurs’? Does this bring a sort of ‘clean slate’ for the future?

CLO: I am the kind of person who hates to have regrets. It’s hard but I am trying to accept all the things I have done, good or bad, and take lessons from it to clear the future. So, yes, it’s true, sometimes you need to do a good clean slate for the future and carry on, and try new adventures. Music is helping a lot in this process.

EG: Since we’re still ‘in the studio’… how does the way you create your own tracks inform the way you DJ? How was the process of finding your own voice like?

CLO: As I come from the pop rock scene (I toured a lot with my previous band We are Enfant Terrible, an electro-pop rock band with guitar, drums, and keyboard) I always imagine a song in a pop way, with chorus/verse/a lot of lyrics and I pay attention to lyrics, I try to write it like a poem with good rhymes and meaningful lyrics. But with my experience as a DJ, I know that you have to play with the bpm, cut songs, keep the best of it, and maybe keep only a few words without losing the meaning. So it’s a difficult but very interesting exercise and I am happy I found the best partners for that with cool remixers such as Justine Forever, You Man, Tonga Conga, W.O.L.F., Koko CeCe, and Jeff Caly.

EG: And what are some of your biggest goals? What would you like to accomplish in this scene?

CLO: Wow, this is a good question! My biggest goal is to stay myself and take maximum pleasure in creating my own songs, something emotional but also make people dance to it. Music is a vector of strong emotions/reflections, and we need this so much right now… Heal the world on the dancefloor.

EG: Now, on to the state of the scene… What do you see as the biggest challenge for the music industry in the next few years, and how do you think artists can adapt?

CLO: Streaming and socials are a big challenge for artists now. Everybody is talking about numbers, stats, social popularity, etc… and you have to be careful not to lose yourself in it and stay creative above all. I really believe that staying aware of your emotions and sharing them in the best creative way, with words, sounds, and images is the only way to create connections with people and become popular in a good way.

EG: Finally, what’s next for CLO? What new milestones are you looking forward to in 2025? Where can your fans catch you next?

CLO: Remixes and a few originals of ‘Ces Futurs’ will be available on a very cool vinyl limited edition in April. I am also working now to create a new live act and be ready for a mini Tour de France for spring and summer 25, I hope I can extend it to other countries… let’s see what happens! I will also do features with new artists and release new songs.

EG: Thank you so much for your time, CLO! We wish you all the best for the future. Take care!

CLO: A huge thanks to you EG for talking about indie music in the best way, let’s meet soon and share love somewhere on the dancefloor.
