Afrika Bambaataa, a foundational figure in the development of hip-hop and electro,  has died. The artist, born Lance Taylor, passed away in Pennsylvania on Thursday, April 9th, 2026, following complications related to cancer.

Emerging from the Bronx River Projects in the 1970s, Taylor became a central figure in New York City’s nascent hip-hop scene. He gained prominence for organizing influential block parties and later founded the Universal Zulu Nation, an organization intended to promote peace and hip-hop culture.

His musical output was defined by the fusion of electronic sounds with breakbeats. His 1986 album ‘Planet Rock: The Album’ remains a seminal work, incorporating elements of Kraftwerk to help establish the electro-funk subgenre.

In recent years, Taylor’s legacy was overshadowed by multiple allegations of sexual abuse involving minors. These claims led to his resignation from the Zulu Nation and resulted in a 2025 civil court loss via default judgment after Taylor failed to respond to trafficking and abuse lawsuits.
