The Ibiza government is developing plans to start a rapid COVID-19 testing system that will be operational by the summer of 2021. This measure could make a tourist corridor possible for those arriving from the United Kingdom and Europe.
Before the pandemic started, Spain received approximately 80 million tourists each year. For this reason, the governments of the Balearic and Canary Islands are working on new measures that favor the sector, and they assume that a solution to the crisis could be the introduction of rapid coronavirus tests in 2021.
The measure announced by the Minister of Tourism of Spain, Reyes Moroto, will impact tourists from countries with a contagion rate greater than 50 per 100,000 inhabitants in the last two weeks. They must present a negative test carried out less than 48 hours before the flight. On the other hand, visitors who arrive at the Balearic or Canary Islands from a country with a contagion rate of 50 or less, will not have to undergo tests to enter.
In addition, before taking their flight back to their country, tourists will undergo a COVID-19 test to detect an active infection for 48 hours. These will be carried out free of charge, and in the event that the result of positive the person will not be able to fly and will have to quarantine themselves at the destination where they are at. It is assumed that the protocol agreed by the government is almost ready.
