Ibiza Council wants to stop Airbnb

A new law wants to prevent renting on Airbnb and other  online websites.

According to the Spanish newspaper El Confidencial, the tourist rental market has led to a massive increase of real estate prices, leaving locals with no financial power to buy or rent due to the high cost of living.

“The arrival of digital platforms has created an unsustainable situation, what we have lived these past summers is not positive for anyone and that is why we want the residential neighborhoods to be residential and not used for tourism,” explains Vicente Torres, Tourism director of the Ibiza Council.

No area except those already qualified as tourist land, ie hotels, and licensed establishments can rent their properties for tourism. Only a handful of municipalities will be able to rent single-family housing, although the city of Ibiza, will not even allow it.
