Renowned New York City radio personality, Calvin LeBrun, better known as Mister Cee, has passed away at the age of 57. A key figure at HOT 97 and WBLS, his influence significantly shaped DJ culture in NYC. His death was confirmed by HOT 97 on April 10th, 2024.
Born in 1966, LeBrun’s DJ career started early, inspired by his DJ uncle and the music from his West Indian home. A high school friendship with Big Daddy Kane set his career trajectory, solidifying his reputation in the radio industry.
LeBrun also played a pivotal role in the rise of The Notorious B.I.G, promoting him and even assisting in recording his demo. He was an associate executive producer on Biggie’s debut album ‘Ready to Die’ released in 1994.
For over two decades, Mister Cee was a fixture on HOT 97, hosting the popular ‘Throwback at Noon’ show and championing emerging artists like Jay Z, Alicia Keys, and 50 Cent.
In 2013, he left HOT 97 amidst controversy over solicitation arrests. After his departure, he continued his radio career at SiriusXM.
Following his passing, the hip-hop community has paid numerous tributes, including those from 50 Cent, MC Lyte, and DJ Jazzy Jeff.
