Lips & Rhythm regulars Jesse Sizmo & Seb Hall have come together for a new EP titled ‘Bad Kids Beach Club’. The record features two new original tracks in ‘45 Degrees’ and ‘Del Arrecife’, plus a remix by Camilo Miranda. ‘Bad Kids Beach Club’ is meant as a warm, sun-bleached tribute to the White Isle, better known as Ibiza, its secret lagoons, hazy mornings, and breathtaking sunsets. Lips & Rhythm are offering it as a digital download, as well as a 10’’ vinyl.
Today, we caught up with Jesse & Seb to talk about their new adventure as Bad Kids Beach Club, the release of their self-titled record, and that Ibiza sunshine.
Electronic Groove: Hi there Jesse! Hi Seb! How have you been guys? We’re excited to have you with us. Where are you based right now? What is lockdown looking like over there?
Bad Kids Beach Club: Heyo! We are as well as can be. Seb is in Miami and at the moment Jesse is in London. Miami is basically a ‘party’ city at the moment, while London is on a pretty strict lockdown, but we have been making music.
Electronic Groove: How have you kept yourselves entertained? Did you learn or pick up any new skills?
Bad Kids Beach Club: We have just been spending more time in the studio and getting better at programming and arranging.
Electronic Groove: Let’s dig a bit into your background…What were your first contacts with electronic music like? How did you guys meet?
Bad Kids Beach Club: Seb was sending music to Lips & Rhythm in 2016, and in the summer of 2017 we released his first EP and he toured Europe with Birds Of Rhythm, and Smokes. During a rather strange time in Ibiza that involved missing luggage, missing flights, and being marooned in a forest that overlooked the sea with our favorite islander, DJ Camilo Miranda, Bad Kids Beach Club was born.
Electronic Groove: What was it that felt like you guys could collaborate together? How do you think you complement each other?
Bad Kids Beach Club: We started jamming on that trip in Ibiza while we were stranded with a lot to smoke and all the time in the world. The crashing waves and distant wind chimes blowing in the air were definitely an influence. Seb has a penchant for heavy grooves and Sizmo is always trying to recreate melodies he hears in his head. We also love working with Camilo Miranda, who, for us, represents the true Balearic spirit. He grew up there and programs music at the legendary Pikes Hotel. His vocals are featured on ’45 Degrees’ and he delivered a proper remix of the tune for the club and/or cave rave.

Electronic Groove: And now you’re promoting ‘Bad Kids Beach Club’. How did that come about? What’s the concept behind it?
Bad Kids Beach Club: The concept is being stranded in the glowing sun of the Balearic Islands, and of course, all the wild nights out and the mornings after. We were being bad, partying, and had a few promoters book us under that name so we could play back-to-back-to-back all night long with no restraint. The free-spirited energy of our sister and vinyl aficionado Smokes was a large part of our inspiration. She and Camilo are like two peas in a pod when it comes to riding freedom like the wind.
Electronic Groove: Were you looking for a particular sound in this one? Did the outside world influence creativity in the studio?
Bad Kids Beach Club: When you are young and you see CDs or record sleeves with pictures of Ibiza, which has been party island since before the Romans, it has this feeling of mystery, of a grander mythology too large to grasp. We felt compelled to add to that timeless myth. A lot of people miss what Balearic music is about. It isn’t techno or even house music. It is about blending that ambient National Geographic record in your bag with an obscure Andean pan flute record, and then some New York disco or Spanish flamenco all mixed with the Mediterranean sea as the background. A lot of those elements are definitely found in this release.
Electronic Groove: How do you envision these cuts blasting through a proper sound system? Have you got any recommendations for anyone who is about to listen to ‘Bad Kids Beach Club’?
Bad Kids Beach Club: We really just want to play this record at the pool at Pikes Hotel in Ibiza with the Balearic don Camilo Miranda and also in the naughty rave cave there on the Void system after the sun goes down. The beauty of this release is it is not trying to compete with your typical 2 AM main room club track. It is a deeper musical adventure.
Electronic Groove: What can we expect from you going forward this year?
Bad Kids Beach Club: Seb runs a label focusing on more club and rave music, Mickey’s Laundry Line. They are working on an upcoming physical release that should be coming out a little later in the year. And Jesse has been finishing a longer album with his partner Soleil in their duo Birds Of Rhythm, while also preparing more releases for Lips & Rhythm. 2021 we are rolling through!
