Felipe Callado: “I couldn’t be happier with my return”

Felipe’s musical career began in 2007. Always averse to musical labels he quickly defined himself as a singular artist. His personality and talent quickly led him to conquer not only the public, but to catch the attention of those who have always influenced him.

His contribution to the electronic music scene goes far beyond the music. He is the founder of Gigloop, a marketplace that revolutionizing the electronic music market and It has been awarded two important international awards: Innovation of the Year at IMS Ibiza, the most important award in the electronic music industry, and the French Tech Ticket awarded by the French Government to international startups.

We recently chat with Felipe Callado to talk about his return to the decks.

Electronic Groove: Hey Felipe, thanks for taking the time. We know you’ve been busy lately with projects that have kept you away from the booth. What can you tell us about this past couple of years?

Felipe Callado: Hey! It’s a pleasure to be here on EG again. My last three years were very busy as since 2016 I got deeply involved with my biggest project yet, Gigloop. It is an online platform that allows club and promoters to find and book artists online. Since it’s foundation, the project has grown in a very significant pace and already won 2 international awards: the Innovation Award in IMS Ibiza 2018 and the French Tech Ticket, an award from the French Government that led us to move the company to France. So, until the first half of 2018, despite being very close and involved in the industry, I had to step away from the booth. I always knew it would be something temporary as my heart was always on the music side, so I just had to bring Gigloop to a point where it would not fully depend on me, and now I’m back!

EG: What are your current plans?

Felipe Callado: Thankfully now, Gigloop is growing without needing my full attention and I can take better care of my music career I still dedicate a lot of time on it, but more and more all my time is being filled with music and my career.

EG: Can you define your sound in three words?

Felipe Callado: It’s really hard, especially because my music compasses such a vast spectrum of sounds and genres, and I try to blend it all in something that’s truly mine. But if I’d have to choose 3 words, I’d say: groovy, melodic and deep, in that order of importance.

EG: It’s great that your back into Djing. You were recently in Peru playing in different parties, how was the experience?

Felipe Callado: Peru is such a great place to be and to play. This was my second tour there in the last 6 months, and this time it was super intense, together with a great friend of mine and one of the best DJs I’ve ever heard, Tolinchilove. It was 5 gigs in 5 days, all over the country, from Mancora, in the northern tip, almost in the border with Ecuador, to a beautiful festival in a paradisiac beach in the South of the country, and with amazing gigs also in the capital Lima and Chiclayo.

“My music compasses a vast spectrum of sounds and genres”

EG: Do you have any gigs lined up?

Felipe Callado: I couldn’t be happier with my return and I never imagined things would be coming so fast. For the next months, I have some really exciting gigs coming: I’m returning to South America for another tour in April, this time it will be really intense, with 15 gigs tour in 4 weeks period in 3 different countries: Colombia, Peru and Brazil. Also in May & June, I’ll be touring in Asia together with Elekfantz, one of the most prominent Brazilian acts, which is co-produced by Gui Boratto as we’ll be playing in Hong Kong along with other Asian cities.

EG: What about playing in a bigger stage, anything planned?

Felipe Callado: On April I’ll be playing in the Electronic Arts Festival, which is an amazing festival by the beach in Barranquilla, Colombia, and also at the legendary Baum in Bogota, which I’m really happy to be playing at, as this club is a milestone in the South American clubbing scene.

EG: You have been living in Europe during the last few years. Are you going back or staying in Brazil?

Felipe Callado: That’s a really hard question, as it depends on many factors that I still can’t control. Thankfully my life and job allows me to be where I personally want to be, so I’m constantly traveling around. For example, despite my base being in Paris, last year I just spent 3 months in the city.

EG: In regards to Brazil, how’s the scene right now? Any new venues you’d like to recommend?

Felipe Callado: Unfortunately Brazil passed thru a devastating economic crisis in the last years and our scene was directly affected by it. We saw a significant reduction in the number of clubs and parties in our country. Fortunately, there are some brave entrepreneurs that kept doing an amazing job and are doing some top quality events. From the big ones, I could name Colours and Levels and Ressonancia, that are always doing super solid events. From the newcomers, I’d name Seas, Sharp Movement and Technoperfect which are super cool also.

“Every artist is a true entrepreneur”

EG: You have been involved with music as an artist and entrepreneur. Do you think they complement each other or not exactly?

Felipe Callado: Totally. Every artist is a true entrepreneur, in order to pursue his dream and to be able to live off his art, they have to give up a standard life and job and assume a huge risk. The most successful artists are like entrepreneurs, hard workers and obsessed by their dreams. People tend to think it’s just talent and that’s the biggest fallacy that exists. To master something you need to be absolutely obsessed by it, mastering just comes with a tremendous amount of dedication and hard work.

EG: What’s your favorite part of every facet, artist and entrepreneur?

Felipe Callado: I think it’s freedom. Freedom to express what you are and what you believe. Both, in music and in Gigloop, I can say they are a reflection of what I am, and to be able to inspire people thru them, it’s simply amazing.

EG: Thanks and all the best in 2019!

Felipe Callado: Thank you very much! Long life to EG!
