Nadja Lind & Helmut Ebritsch have been creating music in a completely unique way as KLARTRAUM since 2006. Using two independent synchronized workstations in one continuous flow from a blank canvas to the finished piece, KLARTRAUM has become a synonym for the finest, multidimensional electronic music. Now, celebrating LUCIDFLOW’s 250th release, the duo is behind the drop of their new EP, ‘Univers d’Amour’, and a revamped virtual experience on their websites.
EG caught up with KLARTRAUM to learn more about the release of ‘Univers d’Amour’, their label LUCIDFLOW, their workflow, plans for the future, and more.
EG: Hello Nadja! Helmut! It’s a pleasure to have you here with us today. How have you been? How’s your year going so far?
KLARTRAUM: Hi, pleasure to be here. We’ve been doing really well. A lot is going on in the studio and in addition, we’ve just launched two new websites KLARTRAUM-Music.com and NadjaLind.com which is always a lot of work in the background. So we’ve been really busy, grateful and happy.
EG: Congratulations on the release of ‘Univers d’Amour’! What has the reception been like so far?
KLARTRAUM: Thank you! We are so in bliss and awe about this beautiful “Universe of Love creation”. We’ve received such personal and deeply soul-touching feedback since we played it for the first time live in our live performance on an old fortress back in September of last year, which was an adventure in itself. We are extremely grateful since this is a very particular and special piece of music to us. We feel it’s our next level, a new state of KLARTRAUM music production.
EG: What’s the inspiration behind ‘Univers d’Amour’? Where does the title come from?
KLARTRAUM: The title was inspired by a conversation we had with the GPT-3 OpenAI (artificial intelligence). “Generative Pre-trained Transformer 3 is an autoregressive language model that uses deep learning to produce human-like text. It is the third-generation language prediction model in the GPT-n series created by OpenAI, a San Francisco-based artificial intelligence research laboratory”. (Wikipedia)
We wanted to check out the power of this new AI so we started asking about love and what it thinks about it. After a certain time it came up talking about the universe of love and that we live in it, and that it surrounds us and supports us to be the best that we can be and live to our full potential.
EG: Musically speaking, what can listeners expect on ‘Univers d’Amour’? Did you create the piece knowing you’d also end up with the ‘Liquid Remix’?
KLARTRAUM: We felt like composing a special warm and soul-touching piece of music in order to radiate positivity into the world and hearts of our much-beloved listeners and (longtime) fans.
The liquid version is our new calling, which we found out about just recently. We were tired of the restrictive “fitting into a certain genre or functional club music” and craved doing something boundless and free in order to express more our multidimensional organic free-flowing, unique KLARTRAUM style of composing live.
“After a certain time, it came up talking about the universe of love and how we live in it, and that it surrounds us and supports us to be the best that we can be and live to our full potential”
EG: And ‘Univers d’Amour’ will be released on your own LUCIDFLOW, signaling 250 releases! Congratulations! It must have been a long road!
KLARTRAUM: Phenomenal! We would have never dreamt of such a number when we started our LUCIDFLOW label years ago. Looking back, in 2009 we were in a completely different mindset and state and so many amazing and mind-blowing possibilities and connections have presented themselves along the way. We are super grateful for having made up our mind to create LUCDIFLOW and for all our wonderful, talented artists, collaborators, and for our beautiful fans and long-term supporters. A dream come true!
EG: Speaking about landmarks, you have also launched your own website, KLARTRAUM-MUSIC.COM. What can your fans find here?
KLARTRAUM: We love to show more of our background to the fans. This includes a ‘How We Make This Music’ section and a ‘The Spirit of KLARTRAUM’ section. We are also proud to have all our albums listed there and a section curated by our best friends including their favorite KLARTRAUM tracks.
EG: What’s your dynamic in the studio like by now? Do you play on each other’s strengths and weaknesses?
KLARTRAUM: As you can see in our explanation video on KLARTRAUM-Music.com, ‘How We Make This Music’, we create KLARTRAUM in a completely unique way. Synchronizing two studios to one sound system and creating in parallel and in a live flow recording session.
We have been crafting music in this very particular way for many years and so we have a feel for what we want and what the process is about, so not many words or takes are needed in order to create a new KLARTRAUM masterpiece. Many times a new track is ready in one or two sessions.
EG: What else can we expect from KLARTRAUM and LUCIDFLOW in the near future? What new milestones are you looking out for in the coming months?
KLARTRAUM: We have been creating some extraordinary KLARTRAUM liquid sessions that are in the same league as ‘Univers d’Amour’ as well as some more ambient-oriented stuff. But to be honest, we are both surprised about the wonderful outcome every time we sit down to create music. Our latest piece already sounds like my new most favorite track ever. So we keep on surprising ourselves, hahaha.
Passing 250 EPs on LUCIDFLOW, we already have so many fantastic releases in the pipeline: Some of them are new to our label, such as Butane, Dott, Santafeo, and Bruit Blanc; some already family members such as Dub Taylor, Eddy Romero, Riko Forinson, D. Diggler, Mark Jackus, Marcus Sur, G-Man, Liuos, Nvelope, Reckreator, Dip and Mielafon, and more. We are also going to release an ambient album by Tim Kossmann, which is rather unusual, but when we heard it we couldn’t resist. So there’s a lot of exciting music on LUCIDFLOW, Sofa Sessions, and im-moral to be discovered now and in the future.
“We have been crafting music in this very particular way for many years and so we have a feel for what we want and what the process is about, so not many words or takes are needed in order to create a new KLARTRAUM masterpiece”
EG: Thank you so much for your time guys! We wish you all the best for the future!
KLARTRAUM: Thank you for having us and for your inspiring questions. Much love to our beautiful artists for their phenomenal sound creations. Music is energy.
