EG spoke with Naim Zarzour to learn about his history, his Midnight and Daytime Service parties, and more.
EG: Hello Naim! Welcome to EG. It’s a pleasure to have you here with us. How do you feel? Where have you been recently?
Naim Zarzour: Thank you for having me. I’m feeling great and full of energy. Currently I’m working on my 3-track EP, and for almost 2 years, I’ve been continuously working on Midnight Service and now also on the newest series of parties called ‘Daytime Service’. Recently, I have played at Houston and Medellin Pride celebrations, and, of course, in my city, Miami. It’s a pleasure for me to be part of all these events that bring love, great music, and good vibes together!
EG: Very good. For those who don’t know you, could you tell us how you started as a DJ, how long have you been mixing electronic music and how would you define your sound currently?
Naim Zarzour: Since I can remember I have always liked music and I studied to prepare myself. When I was 19, I was in an urban music group. Then, I began to be interested in electronic, and as a hobby, I started mixing. My career as a DJ began professionally almost 8 years ago when I moved from Venezuela to Miami. After playing at a friend’s party, many opportunities began to arise that today have led me to develop within the industry. As for my sound, it has been evolving and enriching over the years, and all the influences I have been able to absorb around the world. Honestly, defining a specific sound would be limiting it to a single space, since music is so infinite. But if I had to say some of my favorite genres they would be house, afro, funky, and disco mainly, which combine a happy, energetic, and sexy atmosphere.
EG: Currently you run your own party, Midnight Service. ¿What’s the party concept?
Naim Zarzour: Well, Midnight Service is my spoiled child. It started in early 2023 and has grown quickly and consistently. It is characterized by offering a variety of artists and performances with musical diversity for the enjoyment of the community. It’s a party that takes place once a month in Miami, currently residing in a club called MAD Live Wynwood. It is an LGTBQ+ party that is open to the public, offering a safe, happy, and positive space for each person to enjoy and be free to be as they wish. On average we have had around 650 attendees per event, and we have had national and international DJs as guests. We have also collaborated with other parties, such as Wynwood Pride, Function Brooklyn, Dreamland Festival, and the official after-party of the BEYONCÉ concert, where we have brought together 1000 people. I invite you to visit our Instagram @midnightservice.mia, so you can see and feel the essence of this “safe space” that we have lovingly developed for everyone.
EG: ¡Congratulations on Midnight Service’s first anniversary! ¿ What are your plans for the coming months?
Naim Zarzour: Thak you! Yes, April 5th, was our first anniversary, where we celebrated diversity and freedom. People are very happy because it is a space that, despite Miami being a cosmopolitan city, lacked this type of atmosphere, and this has made us known in different cities in the United States, and in other countries as well. As for upcoming plans, in addition to continuing to improve the quality of production, we are already planning to bring Midnight Service to New York, and soon to Los Angeles, and Panama. We already have all of 2024 planned, where we will have surprises that include special international guests who will continue to elevate the Midnight Service experience.
“Honestly, defining a specific sound would be limiting it to a single space, since music is so infinite. But if I had to say some of my favorite genres they would be house, afro, funky, and disco mainly, which combine a happy, energetic, and sexy atmosphere”
EG: You have mentioned to me a new event series, Daytime Service. Can you tell us what is your latest project about?
Naim Zarzour: Daytime Service is the offspring of Midnight Service. We wanted to bring some day vibes to the city, and we got the opportunity to take over the rooftop pool at the Arlo Hotel in Wynwood, which is an amazing venue. This pool party idea was born in late 2023, and it’s becoming a great plan for our community. I’m proud to be working on this for all my people.
EG: Also, you are also about to present 3 tracks produced by you. Can you tell us about your production process? How have you been preparing for that?
Naim Zarzour: Yes, indeed, I am about to release three tracks produced entirely by me, from the musical structure to the vocals that I recorded myself. Honestly, it has been a long process and a lot of dedication because you need to invest a lot of time in the study, and understanding all the details is important so that the cuts have their true essence, in addition to all my work and life responsibilities, which are quite a few (laughter). I am very happy since I had previously produced, but not for myself, but developing copyright-free music in documentaries, videos, and scoring plays, among others. Therefore, it fills me too much to be able to say that I am already in the final stretch of this process in which I have been working for a long time and in a special way. I hope it’s to everyone’s taste, so stay tuned!
EG: Now on to another topic… What is your opinion on the current state of the electronic scene worldwide?
Naim Zarzour: I think we are in an extremely important moment for electronic music. Unlike in the past, the talents of this scene have the opportunity to be recognized as relevant artists worldwide, including them in awards and at some of the most important events in the world. Previously, only singers and bands were generally taken into consideration, but now this revolution is allowing DJs and electronic music producers to stand out and be recognized, increasingly as an essential part of the music industry.
EG: Finally, can you share what’s next for Naim? What can we expect from you in the coming months? Where can your followers see you?
Naim Zarzour: As I already mentioned, I will soon be making my debut as a producer, which is the most important thing for me right now. As for my next dates as a DJ, I will be in, New York, and Mexico, among other places to be confirmed. You can find all this information on my social networks, where I always publish, and for more details, I invite you to consult my agenda on my website.
EG: Thank you very much for your time, Naim! We wish you all the best for the future. See you on the dance floor!
Naim Zarzour: Thank you for this interview, I am sincerely grateful. I wish you and everyone the best. Huge hugs!
