Robag Wruhme: “If the ideas don’t come up, even the best setup is useless”

A prolific, beloved member of the German techno community, Weimar-based producer/DJ Gabor Schablitzki is known for his steadily paced yet unconventional productions, his eclectic full-lengths, and his adventurous mix sets.

EG caught up with Robag Wruhme to learn more about the release of his new ‘Speicher 123’ EP on Kompakt, his evolution, future plans, and more.

EG: Hi Gabor! Welcome to EG. It’s a pleasure to have you here with us. How have you been? Where are you based right now?

Robag Wruhme: Hi EG! I am now living in Bad Berka. This is a linchpin for the urban high life. About 4 million people live here. Berlin has become too small for me. The Countryside is too boring.

EG: So, congratulations on the release of your ‘Speicher 123’. What has the initial reception been like?

Robag Wruhme: Thanks! The two tracks are celebrated hard. That’s very good.

EG: What can your fans expect to find on ‘Speicher 123’? Is there a particular concept running through this one?

Robag Wruhme: Yes, it’s gotten pretty cool. The ‘Speicher’ series want more oriented dance material. A playground where I feel very comfortable. I’m not one of those who only produce one sound and one mood. I am happy to be able to express myself in different directions. Fire is fire.

EG: In which ways would you say your sound has evolved since the release of your first EP for Kompakt? How have you evolved on a personal level?

Robag Wruhme: For one thing, the tools are constantly changing. By that, I mean software and hardware. On the other hand, you always gain new knowledge about the matter and the demands grow with it. I’ve become more serious and critical. That’s good on an intellectual level, but it sometimes annoys me because I miss the youthful lightness.

EG: What does your studio look like at the moment? Have you recently picked up any new soft or hardware you’d personally recommend?

Robag Wruhme: Less is more, and little can often be more than a thousand buttons and sunk money, which in the end only collects useless dust. You can invest 500,000 euros in equipment, but if the ideas don’t come up, even the best setup is useless.

EG: How do you keep entertained when not in the studio? Any good books, movies, series, or music that have caught your attention lately?

Robag Wruhme: So, I’m a father of two. There’s no time for books, though! Right now, I’m reading ‘Herkunft’ by Saša Stanišić. But always only temporarily. The time windows are very small. The problem with series is that I get addicted to it too quickly and it eats up my time completely. So I MUST NOT even start with that. Self-preservation. Pity!

EG: Everybody says that to “make it”, you should “be yourself” or “be unique”. What would you say that really means? Surely not everyone that really “listens to themselves” is going to make it in the industry, right?

Robag Wruhme: All utter nonsense. First and foremost, people are very fortunate to have been in the right place at the right time. Because otherwise, this would mean that ANYONE could be a big act who indulges in these attributes. Also, it suggests, and I see it in this case, as “all others being regarded as losers”. Statements like this make me sick.

EG: What are your thoughts on the current state of the scene? What would you like to see more and less of?

Robag Wruhme: Which scene do you mean? There is no scene. There is only one community of interests, where “community” has no social component. This is a monkey circus where whoever sits highest in the tree and opens their mouth gets the best spot.

“This is a monkey circus where whoever sits highest in the tree and opens their mouth gets the best spot”

EG: What is art and why do we need it?

Robag Wruhme: Art is the tool to recognize and perceive oneself. Be it a picture or a piece of music. That’s why art is interpreted so differently, because people are configured in such detail. In addition, the cellation of art is always an expression of a rich society.

EG: What’s next for Robag Wruhme? What particular milestones are you looking forwards to now? Where can your fans catch you next?

Robag Wruhme: I’m working on the next album and this one will go down in history. After ‘Wuzzelbud KK’, ‘Thora Vukk’, and ‘Venq Tolep’, the three are getting a sister who will get to the point again.

EG: Thank you so much for your time, Gabor! We wish you all the best for the future.

Robag Wruhme: Thanks very much! You too.
