Sébastien Léger & & Roy Rosenfeld: “Once the trend is over, you’re dead with it”

Anywherelse has announced its much-anticipated return to London’s Koko Camden with its ‘Winter Burn’ celebration in collaboration with Koko Electronic. The gathering will take place this Friday, December 16th, 2022.

For Anywherelse’s last outing of the year, the brand will be “transporting attendees from London to the Playa” with a stellar lineup of artists and visuals, including musical performances by world-class acts, including Sébastien Léger, Roy Rosenfeld, and Newman (I Love).

Ahead of their B2B performance at Koko Camden for Anywherelse’s ‘Winter Burn’, EG caught up with Sébastien Léger & Roy Rosenfeld to learn more about their relationship, views on the music scene, and more.

EG: Hi Sébastien! Welcome to EG. It’s a pleasure to have you here with us. How have you been? Where are you right now?

Sébastien Léger: Hello all. Currently recovering from an insane summer, I’m home now, which is the first time in 2 months.

Roy Rosenfeld: Thanks, all is well here. Right now, in Amsterdam Schiphol airport, on the way back home to Tel-Aviv after a short in-and-out US weekend tour.

EG: Definitely a much-needed rest. We’re almost at the end of the year…Any particular highlights for the scrapbook?

Sébastien Léger: Since I have the memory of a goldfish, I’m terrible with picking highlights, I barely remember where I was last week!

Roy Rosenfeld: My memory must be better than Seb’s. I think we had a couple of nice shows together lately. We had the first Lost Miracle showcase in Bali, which was exciting and fun. As well we have played some nice B2B sets in Toronto and Dubai lately, which were good too. It was a good year overall full of many small and big events around the globe.

EG: We are excited about your upcoming back-to-back performance with Roy Rosenfeld at London’s Koko Camden for Anywherelse’s ‘Winter Burn’. What can your fans expect from this show?

Sébastien Léger: I, personally, could not make any (decent) music for a while, as I was busy touring like crazy the past 6 months, but I have made 2 or 3 new tunes that are totally worth playing, plus obviously some new ones from Roy.

Roy Rosenfeld: That’s correct, being busy touring makes the production process way slower, but I have managed to finalize some tracks on the road as well. For us, those tracks aren’t brand new, but surely most of the ears in London aren’t familiar with these tunes. So basically, there are many new IDs to play, haha. It should be a fun show. Looking forward to it.

EG: How long have you guys known each other now? When and why did you decide to try out your first back-to-back? Do you remember?

Sébastien Léger: I believe we know each other for about 10 years or so. We had been playing a lot on the same lineups, and I would usually come after Roy, but I would stay there for his entire set before mine. Eventually, we thought it would just make more sense to share the fun together, rather than going solo after each other.

Roy Rosenfeld: What he said. It simply brings a different energy to the dance floor. I love that. We tried playing together in Barcelona 3-4 years ago if I remember correctly. Now we play more often at the same events, so naturally, we prefer sometimes to share the booth than playing one after another.

EG: In your opinion, what does it take for a good back-to-back session? What is the key aspect most partnerships should work on?

Sébastien Léger: This is our 4th or 5th back-to-back now. We have similar tastes in music, it’s important to know each other well too. We tend to play 2 tracks each, then eventually the last hour we do 1 / 1 each.

Roy Rosenfeld: That’s true, before understanding the circumstances, feeling the moment, and connecting with the crowds (which are some of the main keys for a good set), knowing each other’s personalities makes the whole difference. We know each other’s attitudes and behavior, as well as preferences. We can sometimes even laugh at each other’s music selection, way of mixing, and techniques, but at the end of the day, it makes everything even more fun, and less stressful. It lets us be ourselves.

EG: What’s your opinion on the current state of the scene? What would you like to see more and less of?

Sébastien Léger: It’s nothing new if I tell you that the social networks did not help to bring the quality up front. We’re are the end of a cycle, of an era of many genres, techno all sounds the same, Melodic Techno all sounds the same, Organic House all sounds the same, Afro House all sounds the same… I’m trying to stay away as much as I can from the trends, as once the trend is over, you’re dead with it. Apart from that, more risks and surprises from music producers and less copy/paste, like I have seen the past 2/3 years.

Roy Rosenfeld: We’re facing another stage where music is just being over-cycled, it feels sometimes that creativity is nearly gone. The main reason for that, in my opinion, is the enormous number of music producers around the world. Finding original/satisfying music thru promos is almost impossible, as everything sounds the same to me. Although it doesn’t really surprise me – that is a natural behavior in every field. I would be very happy to see more small open-air daytime events rather than warehouse cold-dark events. I think the combo of open skies and greens brings joy to life. I’m aware that it’s not possible everywhere and every time, but there is always a solution!

EG: What’s next in store for Sebastien Leger & Roy Rosenfeld?

Sébastien Léger: We are currently working on a new track together, testing starts this weekend (at the time of writing this).

Roy Rosenfeld: Besides our new collaboration track, I’m going to release next month a single on Keinemusik’s VOD Records. Very excited about this one too.

EG: Thank you so much for your time! We wish you all the best for the future.

Sébastien Léger: Thanks, wishing everyone a healthy 2023, as it’s the most important thing!

Roy Rosenfeld: Thanks for your having us and wish you a wonderful 2023.
