Siege’s techy take on house has graced labels from Toolroom and Saved to Yousef’s Circus, Alan Fitzpatrick’s We Are The Braze and Big Beat in the US.
From his breakthrough record on Azuli, Siege’s latest productions have headed in a slightly darker direction, resulting in support from Adam Beyer, Yousef, Alan Fitzpatrick, Hot Since 82 and Nic Fanciulli, the latter of which was so impressed with Siege’s sound that he signed the two-track Motion EP to his label Saved this summer.
2019 is shaping up to be a breakthrough year for Siege, with two huge upcoming records – Marshall Jefferson x Siege Move Your Body and his remix of Green Velvet’s Bigger Than Prince – set to fire him squarely into the limelight.
We caught up with Siege to talk about his latest musical projects.
Electronic Groove: Hi Siege, thanks for your time today. You recently came back from ADE, how was the experience?
Siege: Yes, I have! It was amazing as always. On Wednesday I played the Toolroom party which was good fun and a family affair. Thursday I’ve had some interviews including one with DJ MAG France and Deezer. I didn’t have to play on Thursday so I went to check out Tomorrowland’s ‘Our Story’ – amazing show (but not really my kind of music (laughs). After that I went to Joris Voorn’s Spectrum and popped into Awakenings Drumcode for a minute after that too. On Friday I had the pleasure to be closing down the Amsterdam Tower after Jack Back for an event by Beatport & Toolroom. In between all that I’ve met loads of people and that’s what it’s all about!
Electronic Groove: You are a regular guest of Toolroom. How did you link with them?
Siege: I did a remix a while back for BBT’s ‘Gods Child’ – Mark Knight got the promo and really liked what I’ve done with it. They asked me to remix Sharam Jey ‘Shake That’ in the same style. We both loved working with each other so it all went from there.
Electronic Groove: You recently released a two-track EP entitled ‘Motion’ on Saved Records. What was the inspiration to produce these tracks?
Siege: They both came from a jamming session where I’ve started to lay down some drums and a groove. Usually when I’m happy with my drums and groove I start developing them into a track. With ‘Motion’ I thought it would be cool to leave it stripped back as a groover. As for ‘Paradigm’ I thought it could do with a vocal and I had this one laying around – it was a great fit and I was so happy when I heard Nic Fanciulli wanted to sign it for Saved!!
Electronic Groove: Release wise, what else is planned in the coming months?
Siege: I just dropped a 4-track EP on Alan Fitzpatrick’s ‘We Are The Brave’ imprint. I’m a huge fan of the label so I’m buzzing to be a part of it. Already heard the tracks being played out by Alan Fitzpatrick himself, Hot Since 82 and Anja Schneider. In November I’m releasing my remix for Green Velvet’s ‘Bigger Than Prince’ – this one has been a secret weapon for Carl Cox, Camelphat and Danny Howard during the summer. Last but not least there should be another record coming out on Toolroom in November too 😉
Electronic Groove: Checking your DJ schedule you are announced to play at Elrow on your hometown, Hasselt. What are your expectations for this gig?
Siege: Well it’s been a life long dream to play in Ibiza and last summer I got to play 5 times at Eden. Another dream was to play at Elrow, and I’m so happy I can box this one off this year too… The production is always on point so I expect good things only!
Electronic Groove: What are your plans for the Winter season?
Siege: Lock myself up and stay in the sofa for 3 months with the fireplace turned on (laughs). No – as it turns colder its perfect conditions to get in the studio again and make some music for next year. I’m also renovating a house and there are some nice gigs coming in, so I know what to do with my time for sure.
Electronic Groove: Moving into more personal things, what other music do you like to hear aside from dance music?
Siege: I’m a sucker for 90’s and cool hip hop in general. I also love to listen to old disco records. Last week I was actually listening to some classical piano music – guess I’m getting old (laughs).
Electronic Groove: What do you think it takes to be a good DJ?
Siege: As a DJ – no matter how famous you are – it’s always your ‘job’ to make people dance and have a good time in my opinion. If you can combine this with having your own style and let the crowd discover some new music whilst your at it I think you’re a fairly good DJ.
