Squire: “Anims is a platform where we can give a voice to people”

Barcelona DJ/Producer Jaime Algersuari captivates audiences with his heartfelt melodies and attracts prestigious labels worldwide for his releases. Whilst displaying consistent style and flair in both life and music, Squire’s sound has evolved, soaking up inspiration from and acknowledging diverse traditions and genres. His music spans melodic house to deep to organic, and while delivering stunning instrumentals and catchy vocal hooks, he wins the support of tastemaker DJs from BLOND:ISH to Dixon. From his previous life as the youngest Formula One racer of his time, his Bridges for Music Paris to Amsterdam bike ride, or his desert track ride through the Sahara, Squire puts his all into every one of his passions. Even in this shadowy time, he shines.

Squire is behind the launch of Anims, his brand new label, and is gearing up for what is bound to be a fast-paced 2022. We catch up with him to learn more about the first release, his passion for music, the racetrack, and more.

Electronic Groove: Hi Jaime! Welcome back to EG! It’s a pleasure to have you with us. How’s your year so far? What have you been up to these days?

Squire: Hi! Thank you. It’s always nice to talk to EG! I have enjoyed 2021 in a way, especially because I had great studio time and could concentrate on the release of my album ‘Stop’. It was my first album so it was very special for me to release it. I’m now working hard for new music and of course to kick off Anims, our new platform.

Electronic Groove: By the way, congratulation on your brand new label, Anims! How long has this been in the works? Did you know what you were getting yourself into? Did you talk with other label owners before setting Anims up?

Squire: Thanks! Creating a label was something I always wished to do, but more than that,  it was to create a platform where we can give a voice to people, so that they can then motivate other people. The imprint is just an excuse because we at Anims are music lovers. But the message behind us is where the focus should be.

Anims means to “cheer up” in Catalan, and we want to inspire people through music and personal stories, as we believe that storytelling from people who have lived experiences can positively influence others.

As per managing the label, we are well instructed by my manager Ralf Kollman from Mobilee Records. We have a very close relationship and everything coming from him is a gift for me and Alex. We had no clue about starting a label. I had no clue on how royalties or neighboring-rights work. Neither what a distributor nor a publisher was! 🙂 So, all in all, feel very lucky to have a great team behind us as we get ready for the kick-off.

Electronic Groove: What’s the ethos behind Anims? What kind of music can we expect to come out from there?

Squire: Music should explain a story, a story that influences an audience. We believe that sharing stories with the world, whether it’s a spoken story or a musical story, can massively inspire people to reach personal goals, dreams, and professional challenges! Expect nothing but a wide, colorful spectrum of genres and sounds with new artists.

Electronic Groove: Do you have in clear view how the label is going to operate in terms of releases, VA, remixes, their frequency, etc?

Squire: We don’t really have a release plan honestly. I’d like to release an EP myself this year. We also plan to release a Kevin di Serna EP later on too, and we want to make sure every single release is taken special care of. We would like to treat music as a special piece of art and try not to look as if we’re making mass-produced hamburgers. We’d love to release music that lasts longer and that maybe you will listen to in the next 10 years and still remember the story all over again!

Electronic Groove: By the way, Anims is already set for its maiden voyage with the release of Oriol Calvo’s ‘Love Loud’ EP. Congratulations, again! What can we expect from this package? What has the initial reception been like?

Squire: It’s been great. Looks like some of the big boys are playing the remixes already so we are very happy that the music is being accepted. ‘Love Loud’ is a very romantic, hypnotic dancefloor record with 2 different interpretations to be played out in the sun or in the club.

We’ll see how release day goes and enjoy the whole process.

Electronic Groove: And there’s a very vibrant artwork accompanying the drop. Will future releases respect a similar format? Why did you decide to settle on that particular look/feel?

Squire: I’m very glad you mentioned that actually. As the imprint is based in Barcelona, the whole look has to be attached to Barcelona and the Mediterranean. Gaudi’s modernist architecture, the ‘Gaudi Dragon’, and the colors from our city are the main staples surrounding our imprint.

We also want to take you on a journey. Every song being released is trying to take you on a journey, trying to explain something and penetrate. We think this process is like bypassing reality, and so we let the subconscious judge. So, this is when Dali comes to our mind and makes us think about different symbols and abstract art.

Electronic Groove: And on your front as a producer? What’s in store for the coming releases? Can you anticipate anything?

Squire: At the moment, I’ve run out of music after the album release. And just released a track together with Dinky on Frau Blau. I’d like to focus on a couple of EPs this year, maybe focusing more on the dance floor.

Electronic Groove: Being an ex-F1 driver, do you still keep up with the sport? What did you think of the last Championship race? How do you get that ‘rush’ nowadays? Does it come from playing live? Are they similar in any way?

Squire: Yes, I sometimes still watch some highlights every now and then. I still enjoy watching some F1 action. The last race was cool to watch and I’m glad Max (Verstappen) made it. He deserved to win honestly. As for the rush, I’m back into racing also. I’ve been doing some karting, and still training hard to be back on the race track to get faster.

Electronic Groove: What else can we expect from Squire and Anims in the future? What new milestones are you looking forward to in 2022?

Squire: Hopefully, I’ll be releasing fun music for you and trying to enjoy the whole process of finding new talents and enjoyable music to share. Really looking forward to working hard in the studio and delivering some fresh and newish stuff.

Electronic Groove: Thank you for your time Jaime! We wish you all the best for the future!

Squire: It’s been a pleasure! thank you guys!
