Former Coppelia 101 resident DJ and vinyl distributor worker Iván Smoka has launched a new archival mix series, ‘Smoka SELECTS,’ that looks to capture the sound of Madrid’s club scene during the last 20 years.
The project will highlight a period when the Spanish selector balanced club residencies with deep exploration across diverse electronic music styles.
“Where were you 20 years ago? I was living through a very special time in my life,” Smoka commented. “I was a resident DJ at Coppelia 101, one of Madrid’s most iconic clubs. At the same time, I was working at a vinyl distribution company, where I could fully indulge my musical curiosity. I bought records and immersed myself in countless styles, far beyond what we were playing every weekend at Coppelia 101.”
Recorded entirely on vinyl, the opening installment reflects a decade of early DJ experience and “captures the sound of 20 years ago, when he was able to embrace the freedom and eclecticism that have always inspired him.”
‘Smoka SELECTS’ is designed to bridge historical touchpoints with contemporary and future directions through carefully curated selections from the artist’s personal archive.
Born in Madrid, Iván Smoka is a foundational veteran of Spain’s underground electronic music scene, celebrated for his eclectic, technically meticulous DJ sets and deep hardware-driven production style. Growing up immersed in a diverse musical household, he began collecting records and mixing at an early age before becoming a pillar of Madrid’s club culture as both a resident DJ and promoter at legendary venues like Coppelia 101 and Wonky. Over a career spanning nearly three decades, his distinctive blend of ambient, balearic, electro, techno, and rare grooves has taken him to major international festivals and clubs such as Sónar, FIB, and Amsterdam’s Supperclub. Alongside his solo work, Smoka has shaped a prolific production career through various collaborative projects including Gatos Negros, Disco Felino, and his partnership with Thaddeus X, releasing music on respected imprints like Mobilee, Akbal, and Minuendo.
