Warung Beach Club, Brazil’s iconic temple for electronic music lovers, has long been a symbol of deep connection—between people, music, and the coastal landscape of Itajaí, and its own label is the perfect embodiment of that feeling. This is the sound of our Label Of The Month. This is the sound of Warung Recordings.
Since its creation in 2012, Warung Recordings has served as an extension of that ethos, carrying the spirit of the club to global audiences. Founded by Albuquerque, a resident DJ at Warung and one of Brazil’s leading tastemakers, the label was born out of necessity, ambition, and passion.
“Warung Recordings was created in 2012, alongside my other label, Radiola Records,” Albuquerque explains. “We felt we needed to create a way to release our tracks. For Warung, it was a natural path. As a strong international imprint, releasing artists who have had a connection with the club’s history was something necessary. Furthermore, we wanted to show the world the amazing art made by the resident DJs. Since then, we have made collabs and remixes between them.”
Warung Recordings quickly established itself as a bridge—connecting the artists who’ve graced the club’s revered DJ booth with the emerging talents that Warung itself nurtures. Its releases reflect the club’s musical evolution over the years: a foundation rooted in progressive house, layered with the richness of deep house, melodic grooves, and soulful textures.
“The club has its roots in progressive house,” Albuquerque says, citing pivotal performances by the likes of Sasha, Hernan Cattaneo, Danny Howells, and 16 Bit Lolitas. “That’s when I started to fall in love with electronic music. After the first ten years, we had amazing sets by artists like Solomun and Dusky, who brought a more deep house vibe to the temple. I believe all genres are welcome on our label, but they all must have a ‘soul’ touch. That’s what we chase since day one.”
The roster of Warung Recordings reads like a carefully curated blend of established legends and promising newcomers. From globally celebrated artists like Hernan Cattaneo, Quivver, Dave Seaman, and Hot Since 82, to the new wave of melodic pioneers such as Khen, Newman (I Love), HAFT, and Hicky & Kalo, the label continues to balance reverence for the past with an eye on the future.
“It’s very hard to pick favorites,” Albuquerque admits. “We’ve already released 74 times—between VAs, singles, and EPs. Hernan Cattaneo is always on the top when it comes to my personal taste, and for the importance he has for the scene. We just released Quivver and Dave Seaman, which was a long-time dream for guys who listened to the Global Underground compilations.”
One standout moment was Albuquerque’s collaboration with Emi Galvan, which he proudly highlights: “It’s still the most sold track of the label. I admire his music a lot, and this was a very important moment for us.” Yet for Warung Recordings, as Albuquerque emphasizes, “The most important release is always the next one!”
Warung has always been more than just a club—it’s a cultural institution with a devoted following. This deep sense of community naturally extends to Warung Recordings.
“It’s not crazy to say that the club is religion for regular goers,” Albuquerque explains. “Facebook groups like Warungueiros and Fiel Ao Templo show how much people really care about what happens there. This kind of love and support always makes us really happy and proud. It makes every release very important for us all.”
While physical showcases for the label have been limited, notable events in Mexico, Tulum & Mexico City, before the pandemic underscored Warung Recordings’ growing international presence. Social media platforms like Instagram and SoundCloud continue to serve as key tools for fostering engagement with fans and artists alike.
Every aspect of Warung Recordings reflects its connection to the club’s Balinese-inspired architecture and lush surroundings. From vibrant cover art to meticulous track selection, the label’s output feels like a natural extension of the label’s visual and sonic identity.
“I’m the one who selects the tracks, listens to demos, and talks to artists nowadays,” Albuquerque shares. “We have an art team that changes the covers from time to time, like seasons. All artwork is obviously inspired by the elements of the club. As you guys know, Warung means ‘house’ in Balinese. The architecture is inspired by Bali, so we always have a lot of colors and visuals to bring that from.”
As it looks ahead, Albuquerque envisions the imprint continuing to build connections between international artists and Warung’s resident DJs, striving for increased professionalism and a consistent release schedule. The goal is to feature artists who have a meaningful contribution to make, ensuring the label’s offerings remain impactful and relevant in the ever-evolving electronic music scene.
