Miluhska: “2022 is going to be a year of hard work, sacrifices, and focus”

Miluhska is a DJ, vocalist, and composer from Ecuador, based in Miami. While currently finishing her music production course in Miami, she has begun to produce her original tracks and work on a myriad of collaborations. Coming in strong from a fashion background that features heavily in other artistic areas, she has just released the collaborative single, ‘Lola’, with Fiin, Vander & Ramiro Rossotti on the prestigious Ultra Music. After some personally tumultuous years, Miluhska is decided to channel that energy into her career.

We catch up with the blossoming Miluhska to learn more about the drop of ‘Lola’, how her sound is evolving, aspirations, her background, and much more.

EG: Hi Miluhska! Welcome to EG! We’re glad to have you with us. How have things been going this year? How are you doing?

Miluhska: Hello! Thank you for having me. Things have been very interesting this year, to say the least…But I’m doing great, thank you!

EG: First of all, congratulations on the recent release of ‘Lola’, your collaboration with Fiin, VANDER, & Ramiro Rossotti on Ultra Music! How has Lola been received so far?

Miluhska: Thank you so much! It has been great. The energy these guys bring to the studio is amazing, and they’ve made me feel at home since day 1. It has been doing so well, and I really appreciate the amount of support it’s gotten. It’s such a rewarding feeling to know people love it as much as we do.

EG: How was the creative process for this one like? What is the inspiration behind ‘Lola’?

Miluhska: Fiin and I had been talking briefly about getting in the studio and finally, after months of back and forth, that day came. Vander and Ramiro happened to be there. I had never collaborated with a producer on a song from scratch and that was exactly what we did. So, while the boys started making the track and we all integrated ideas and opinions, I had to start thinking about the melody and the lyrics for it. A few weeks before this day, I had randomly written a verse about my dog named Lola in my notes, I pulled it out and it clicked with this song immediately. We then spent 11 hours in the studio and it was the best studio experience I’ve ever had.

EG: How did you get into electronic dance music? You come from a more diverse musical background, right?

Miluhska: I’ve actually always loved EDM. I went to my first dance music festival in 2013 when I was just 14. But I realize now that I never REALLY understood that world at all back then… I was really into rap and hip-hop for a period of time, until one day I went to Club Space for the first time, and as corny as this sounds, it changed my life. I never went to another club again, and rapidly got into the scene, which if you know, you know it’s another world and I’m still learning.

“Once I started pursuing music, it was so easy, so natural, and fulfilling that I never looked back”

EG: You’re currently finishing a music production course in Miami. How is that going? Did you have any technical/musical knowledge prior to that?

Miluhska: The SAE Institute has been such a special experience. I’ve learned so much about music, what goes on behind it, the business side of it, and most importantly about myself as an artist. It has really challenged me and pushed me out of my comfort zone. Before I decided to go, I had music knowledge but not the technical/business aspect of it.

EG: And you come from a background in the fashion industry, is that right? How does that translate into your music? Do some of that insight permeate your sounds?

Miluhska: I never thought I would have the courage to do what I always dreamt of doing – music. So, I decided to take on fashion since I grew up watching my family work behind the scenes in fashion shows and I truly always loved it. I was a stylist, worked in retail, studied fashion design, and I felt I was good at it. But to say that that is what I wanted to do the rest of my life would be a lie. Once I started pursuing music, it was so easy, so natural, and fulfilling that I never looked back. But my love for fashion will always be a part of me, and I feel like I do a good job showing it with my sense of style. I feel like it really aligns with who I am and the image I want to put out. It has changed a lot since I started building my career, and I love how it continues to evolve as my taste in music does too.

EG: How would you define your sound today? Where do you want to go sonically in the future?

Miluhska: I can never name just one genre when someone asks me this question. I always say my taste in music is like my taste in food – I like everything. I like to play anything with a good melody. Anything that doesn’t bore me and keeps me on my toes, metaphorically and literally. Could be house, disco, ~anything~ with bongos and/or guitar, techno, or deep house. It really depends on what party/crowd I’m playing for. In regards to my singing career, I am still exploring that side of me – I’ve been releasing minimal house records and recently tried something new with my new single ‘Lola’, but I want to start making more R&B, pop, and hip-hop records.

EG: You’re a part of the Odd Pleasures Management Agency as well, right? How does your team help you out? What decisions are they involved in?

Miluhska: Yes! Jaime (my manager) and I connected over our collaboration with my very first single, ‘Biscayne Lady’. We kind of just clicked, we had never met before but we quickly became family. Soon after, Vero came into the picture as my A&R/Creative Director. They’re involved in everything that I do – collaborations, looks, sound, image, contracts, press. Pretty much all the physical and technical aspects of my career. I feel so blessed to have people I can truly depend on and trust no matter what. Wouldn’t want to do this with anyone else.

EG: What else can we expect from Miluhska in the future? What new milestones are you looking forward to in the coming year?

Miluhska: I am currently experimenting with new genres and making new music. You can expect a lot of surprises and collaborations that I am extremely honored and excited about with artists that have been inspiring me since the beginning of my career. 2022 is going to be a year of hard work, sacrifices, and focus. There are a ton of projects that I will be working on to share with the world, and I am so eager and curious to get to know myself more artistically and start working on my first album.

EG: Thank you for your Time Miluhska! We wish you all the best for the future!

Miluhska: Thank you, I appreciate that! I’m grateful for any opportunity I get to share my story.
