A collective of Netherlandish nightclubs is calling for systemic change after the murder of a 17-year-old girl following a night out in the Leidseplein district.

The victim, identified as Lisa at her family’s request, was attacked and killed while biking home to Abcoude in the early morning hours of Wednesday, August 20th, 2025. According to NL Times, she had previously contacted police to report someone following her. A 22-year-old man is now in custody and is also reportedly facing charges for two separate sexual offenses. Authorities have yet to release his name.

In response, numerous clubs have mobilized behind the hashtag #rechtopdenacht (translated as “right to the night”), calling for safer conditions for all who enjoy nightlife in the city. Participating venues include Garage Noord, BRET, Radio Radio, Chin Chin Club, Melkweg, Chicago Social Club, Jimmy Woo, THE OTHER SIDE, Club Up, and Club NYX.

Slogans demanding change have appeared on billboards, marquees, and digital screens across the country, amplifying the campaign’s urgent message. Spearheaded by marketing agency GH+O and Danique de Jong, the initiative includes a press kit, coordinated visuals, and a fundraising effort. A GoFundMe launched on August 23rd has already raised over €430,000, with plans to expand visibility nationwide through highway billboards.

The fundraiser’s statement reads, “We claim the night. In our newest skirt. In our highest pumps. Or running shoes. In the middle of the night. Walking. Cycling. Jogging. On quiet streets. Through a park. Or in the city. Whatever we wear, wherever we are, whatever time it is: let women get home safely.”
