New Faces: Emptyshell

Canadian newcomer Emptyshell is taking her very first steps into the production world with a showstopping blend of ravecore, hard techno, and trance. Her recent bootleg of Andrew Bayer and Matt Lange’s ‘In and Out of Phase’ has been well received, and shows indelible signs of promise. Now, Crisis Of Man is providing a platform for ‘The Same Dream’, her debut EP under this new moniker.

Built around a solid frame, ‘The Same Dream’ is a tough drum workout with spoken word samples and icy granular FX, while Overdriven 909s and skippy percussion form the foundation on which helter-skelter sonics and icy sweeps keep your feet firmly stomping on the dance floor. A definitive must-have as dancefloors all over the globe are returning to life once again.

Emptyshell’s ‘The Same Dream’ is out now via Crisis Of Man, featuring a primal remix by Selective Response. Today we get to know the rising Canadian act.

Electronic Groove: Hi Emptyshell, thanks for your time today. What’s your real name, and where were you born?

Emptyshell: Hello all. I was born in Vancouver, Canada.

EG: Describe your music in 3 words?

Emptyshell: Raw, pounding, and emotive.

EG: Where are you based?

Emptyshell: I’m based in Toronto, Canada.

EG: What labels have you released in your career?

Emptyshell: As Emptyshell this will be my first release on Crisis Of Man.

EG: Can you tell us 3 artists you aspire to/have influenced you?

Emptyshell: M.I.K.E Push, The Advent, and Perc.

EG: How long have you been producing music? What was your first signed release?

Emptyshell: Since 2010. My first signed release was in 2015, on a label called Techburst. The track is titled ‘Talk About Drums’.

EG: Can you name three things you can’t live without on the road when touring?

Emptyshell: Funny you say 3 things because I ALWAYS have the following when touring – DJ headphones, USB’s that are all exact copies of each other, and 3 jacks.

EG: Can you tell us about your next release?

Emptyshell: My next release is called ‘The Same Dream’ with a slamming remix from Selective Response. The tune started off with a spoken word recording ‘It’s the same dream every night’ propelled by a sort of drunk-sounding hoover to dance to alongside the vocal chops. The female voice is the most beautiful instrument, so I’m always sprinkling these elusive sounds In my productions.

EG: Can you share one piece of advice for other aspiring producers?

Emptyshell: My advice would be to practice, put your work out there and finish your damn tracks. If it’s important to you, you’ll make the time to do it.
