We caught up with Tom Laws to talk about his latest release ‘ ‘ via We Are The Brave.
Electronic Groove: What’s your real name, and where were you born?
Tom Laws: My name is Tom Laws and born in Brighton, UK.
EG: Describe your music in 3 words?
Tom Laws: Groovy solid techno.
EG: Where are you based?
Tom Laws: Brighton, United Kingdom.
EG: What labels have you released on in your career?
Tom Laws: Plenty, Phobiq, MB Electronics, IAMT, AnalyticTrail, Unrilis, Respekt, and now We are the Brave, plus plenty more!
EG: Can you tell us 3 artists you aspire to / have influenced you?
Tom Laws: Richie Hawtin without a doubt, his vision inspires me it always has done. Jeff Mills as his style of mixing is one of the first artists that I saw the that got me into what I love so much, and Dave Angle was one of my influences back in the day!
EG: How long have you been producing music? What was your first signed release?
Tom Laws: I’ve been playing music for 23 years but only making music for the last 15 years, meanly regret is that I didn’t start when I was super young (laughs).
EG: Three things you can’t live without on the road when touring?
Tom Laws: Laptop, headphones and techno
EG: Can you tell us about your next release?
Tom Laws: Yeah, it’s on Alan Fitzpatrick’s We Are The Brave called ‘Feel You’ – it’s a three-track EP that I wanted to have some nice female uplifting vocals in it, but also keep its solid techno feel and I think I’ve done that!
I am proud of this release as I’ve played it a lot and people seem to really like it on the dancefloor.
EG: One piece of advice you can give to other aspiring producers?
Tom Laws: If your not committed completely, then maybe it’s not for you, as the industry is so hard to break into you have to really love the music for one obviously, but never give up and keep hammering the studio sessions. Also, don’t think you know everything because even the big boys get inspiration from others, so get in the studio with like-minded people and try some ideas. I find going raving a source for fresh ideas and also to re-inspire even when you think you have had enough, it can light up the spark again!… I can’t stop making tunes or going out, it’s my absolute passion and always has been.
