Perry Bamonte, the British musician part of The Cure, has died at the age of 65. The band officially announced the news via a statement released this Thursday.
His passing occurred following a brief illness while he was at his home during the Christmas period.
The group, fronted by Robert Smith, expressed their profound sorrow while confirming the news. They remembered Bamonte not just as a bandmate but as a dear friend and a cornerstone of their journey.
In their message, The Cure highlighted the musician’s character and artistic legacy, describing him as a subtle yet intense presence within the band. They also emphasized his creativity and dedication over the decades:
“It is with enormous sadness that we confirm the death of our great friend and bandmate Perry Bamonte, who passed away after a short illness at home over Christmas.
Quiet, intense, intuitive, steady, and immensely creative, ‘Teddy’ was a warm and vital part of The Cure’s history.”
Bamonte began his relationship with The Cure in the mid-1980s, initially serving as the band’s manager between 1984 and 1989 before becoming a full-time member in 1990.
From that point forward, he contributed as a guitarist, six-string bassist, and keyboardist, leaving his mark on pivotal albums such as ‘Wish,’ ‘Wild Mood Swings,’ ‘Bloodflowers,’ ‘Acoustic Hits,’ and ‘The Cure.’
Beyond his studio work, Perry Bamonte was a fixture on stage, performing in over 400 concerts across 14 years and establishing himself as an integral part of the band’s tours.
He rejoined the group in 2022 for a new live era. During this time, he participated in an additional 90 concerts, including what the band described as some of the finest shows in their recent history, concluding with ‘The Show of a Lost World’ concert in London on November 1, 2024.
The band concluded their statement by offering condolences to the musician’s family and acknowledging the massive void his departure leaves behind:
“Our thoughts and condolences are with all of his family. He will be deeply missed.”
