Physical music sales skyrocket amid pandemic

Discogs’ sales have increased by almost 30%.

Music marketplace giant Discogs has released to the public their mid-year music report for 2020 which reveals that during the COVID-19 pandemic, physical music (cassettes, CDs, and vinyl) sales have increased almost 30% from 2019, with vinyl up at 33%. CDs have increased by 31% in sales, and cassettes 30.5%. This rise may be correlated to the fact that local shops have been able to move inventory to and sell records through Discogs as an alternative during the global lockdown.

Tame Impala’s ‘The Slow Rush’, Dua Lipa‘s ‘Future Nostalgia’, Grimes‘ ‘Miss Anthropocene’, and Thundercat‘s ‘It Is What It Is’ are among some the reported best selling records in the first half of 2020.
