Practice with Roland’s 808 & 303 in their online studio

The initiative comes in association with Yuri Suzuki.

Japanese instrument manufacturer Roland has created a digital studio that enables visitors to test out two of the most iconic instruments in electronic music, like the TR-808 drum machine and the TB-303 synthesizer.

Under the name 808303 studio, the website comes in collaboration with Yuri Suzuki, and it was inspired by the Electronic: From Kraftwerk to the Chemical Brothers exhibition, found at the Design Museum in London until February 14, 2021, which houses two models of both instruments due to their importance in the history of electronica.

Roland’s TR-808 drum machine and TB-303 bass synthesizer are arguably two of the most innovative inventions in the history of electronic music. This is not just because of their unique sounds, but because of their interfaces and unique perspectives that allow users to take unexpected and innovative approaches to creating music’, says Suzuki. ‘Step sequencing is one of the most common ways to program music on electronic instruments. Its simplicity and well-designed user interface make it possible for anyone to create electronic music. Rows and columns can dictate rhythmic values, note names, octaves, and more. The speed at which it moves dictates the tempo and time signature’.

You can test your skills with both machines here.
