Civil Beasts is a melting together of Bristol duo, Derek Kirkup and Lou Bold. In tandem, they navigate life’s dark places by pouring their hearts into raw autobiographical electronica. Their marriage of hauntingly tender vocals, orchestral synths, and pulsing beats has grown out of an impulse to dance through the pain. Kirkup, a post-classical composer and multi-instrumentalist, left the Academy of Contemporary Music and was drawn into the subtle art of writing film scores.
His sensitive approach to supporting emotion on screen has rightfully won him industry awards and BAFTA association. In amongst his own personal releases, Kirkup has been breaking new musical ground with live, minimalist, deep listening experiences.
Meanwhile, Bold has been weaving spells with her voice and lyrics for some of London’s most established DJs, and creating her unique Dark Disco sound with West Country writers and producers. Her songs speak of love and loss in ways that creep into your heart, while propelling you to the dance floor.
In 2023, Kirkup and Bold fell into each other’s orbit, and through Civil Beasts they have found a way to alchemise life’s bruisings into something beautiful.
